The under 13's got back to winning ways with a win over Gwent at Sandford Cricket Club on Wednesday.
On a sticky, hot afternoon in Mid-Devon the locals won the toss again and had a bat. Looking to put a good total on the board, Devon got off to a flyer with 11 off the first over! After that things slowed up mainly due to some tight bowling from the Gwent attack but also some loose shots and less than impressive running between the wickets. Had it not been for a quick fire 28 from Ollie Robinson coming in at 10 Devon would have struggled to make 130!
Earlier, most batters had got themselves in and established. Ben Spieacha, Sam Taylor and Isaac Windley all getting past 20 but none going on to make a big score. This was the difference between posted 180+ and ending the innings on 169 all out. Had the tail not wagged and added 52, Devon would have posted a well below par total.
However, with runs in the bag and momentum shifted in our favour, the Devon bowlers set about defending 169. In a similar fashion to Devon, Gwent left it until late in the innings to mount a charge. Their number 7 hitting 44 not out to bring the visitors to within 14 runs at the close of play. Earlier their number 3 had also scored 44.
The Gwent innings was slowed by Tom Jeacock, Johnny Joseph, Ollie Robinson, Sam Carpenter & Elliot Adams. All bowling straight and with good control in the middle part of the innings. Extra's were third top scorer! The wickets were shared around with Luke Jefferson & Jonty Walliker picking up 2 each.
We must reduce the number of wides & no balls we bowl!
Nice to win again, but a few improvements as always!
Our thanks to Sandford Cricket Club for hosting. Thanks to Nick Forbes & John Hukku for officiating! A final thank you to all the parents who provided a excellent tea for everyone! Thank you.
