On an indifferent overcast day, Devon, batting second for the first time this season, deservedly defeated Somerset in their ECB County Cup match at Kings Bruton School, Bruton thanks, other than for the last 15 overs, to their bowling and fielding performance and their ability to pace their innings, not panic, build partnerships and support the excellent Mikey Cousens, who ended up 97 not out.
Good tight opening bowling, from Jack Popham and Alex Hunt, was rewarded when Popham had Vickery well caught behind by Rhys Davies, quickly followed by Alex Hunt having Brock caught behind by Davis too in the next over. 26-2 off 10 overs. Somerset then started to recover, albeit slowly, as Josh Mailling, perhaps not quite up to his normal miserly self and Paul Heard backed by the fielders continued to perform well. The introduction of the spinners Jack Cherrington and Ben Stein, in the 19th and 20th overs respectively, changed things with Stein first having Easton caught and bowled and then Rouce caught by Alex Hunt. Paul Heard then coolly ran out Fraser and Somerset were 91-5 off 28 overs. Leach and Arney then again tried to recover the situation for Somerset but as the overs were ticking by the need for more runs mounted. The reintroduction of Paul Heard saw the demise of Leach, comprehensively bowled, Henry Thompson importantly ran out Arney and Jack Popham up rooted Gould’s stumps. 139-8 off 39 overs. Josh Mailling bowled Dibble with the score on 151 and frankly Devon should have then rapped things up! Whether they relaxed, thinking the Somerset batsmen would capitulate, Mikey Cousens absence off the pitch due to a hamstring pull had a psychological affect, or what ever, the fielding became untidy and Carpenter and Weller, took Somerset to 198-9 off their 45 overs. 30-40 more than they should have got!!
Knowing they had to score at just over 4 an over, Devon realised that they did not have to panic and so long as they batted sensibly, taking ever run on offer and supporting each other, that the target was very achievable. Ben Stein’s and Callum Cload’s initial reply and Devon’s reply overall, was greatly assisted by the number of extras 40. Stein was bowled in the 4th over and then Mikey Cousens, refusing a runner, joined Cload and the score progressed to 29 in the 8th over when Cload flicked, probably unnecessarily, at a ball outside his off stump and was caught behind. Laurence May and Cousens then formed the first of three important partnerships (47) taking the score to 76, when Williams bowled May. Josh Mailling and Cousens then took the score to 128 in the 31st over, a partnership of 52 before Mailling played a sweep down the wrong line and was bowled-premeditated? That reverse sweep! Should Josh and Mikey have batted through and won the game? Rhys Davies was then caught and Jack Dart, who has contributed in all three matches, joined Cousens and put on 37 in 6 overs taking the score to 183 before he was bowled. All this time Cousens was, from Somerset’s point of view, annoyingly accumulating runs in a very controlled and mature fashion and on one leg! His running between the wickets was clearly painful, as were certain shots, but he pushed himself to take the singles and turned ones into two. Jack Cherrington, unruffled, then helped Cousens to take Devon past their target with 2.2 overs to go. Devon 202-6, winning by 4 wickets.
Clearly guys, from this match, you have learned, more important lessons. To win a match twice in a day, you should have bowled Somerset out for 150ish, is quite an achievement! Nothing like making life difficult for your selves. You know you can improve upon those last 15 overs- bowling and fielding. James and I do not need to say any more!Nevertheless a brilliant result- enjoy it and the feelings associated with it. Lets keep climbing that mountain together.
Thank you to the Somerset Management, Umpires, Kings Bruton Grounds man and caters, Mr Cherrington for scoring and all the parenst for their support. |
