Match report:
The West won the toss and inserted the East on a cold windy day at Cornwood. East made steady progress reaching 68 for 4 in the 18th over. At this point A Chilcott was joined by H Choules and they put on 84 in 18 overs with A Chilcott showing his emerging pedigree as a batsman supported by a typical nuggety innings from wicketkeeper Choules. The West once again conceded too many wides (27 deliveries providing 42 runs) plus 17 other extras. Only D Ackford with 2 for 22 off 10, B Barriball with a controlled 10 over spell of off spin, C Connaris with 4 for 28 and D Cooper 4 overs for 2 runs, provided the required standards for District cricket.
In reply the West got off to a slow start against Chilcott and Crouch scoring 18 off the first 12 overs without a run coming from the bat! A combination of the bowlers not attacking the stumps and the batsman not prepared to take the initiative led to this passage of play. Barriball tried to inject some momentum into the innings as the East turned to the spin twins of left arm T Thomson and the leg breaks of T Richardson. After scoring 22 off 26 balls and already hitting Richardson for 6 off 2 balls, Barriball charged the leg spin and was smartly stumped by Choules.
The rest of the West batting couldn’t cope with the spinning ball and a lack of technique, shot selection and aptitude backed up by some good deliveries if not consistent overs led to the innings capitulating to 77 all out.
Thanks to Cornwood for their hospitality and to the hardy parents, managers and coaches for their support in the arctic conditions!
