Match Report:
The West won the toss and decided to bat as it looked as if the severe heat would sap the energy of any fielding team. The East’s opening bowlers started off well, bowling tidy lines and lengths but the West batsman played the bowling on merit and looked to play them out. Lancaster was then trapped L.B.W. by Johnson and O’Keefe decided to run to the keeper unsuccessfully, which brought Varcoe to the crease with the remaining opener, Gower, at 21-2. Both batsmen looked to take advantage of any loose bowling from the East, demonstrated by the 52 runs scored in the 5 overs after drinks. Varcoe retired on 51 having smashed her half-century off just 37 balls. Gower then followed suit with the score at 161-2. The rest of the West batsmen batted sensibly with no major contributions before Johnson returned for the East to claim two more wickets with some high quality bowling.
The East innings started well with Thackray smashing the first ball for four, but the run rate started to slow from then on. Both openers played well until Jackman bowled Broadhurst with a yorker and Thackray was run out due to some suicidal running and a direct hit from Gower. Basldon then succumbed to a double-bouncer from Walliker bringing Miles and Durrant together who made the best partnership of the East innings. The pair put on 42 before Durrant fell victim to the Jones sisters, as she was caught behind by Rosie off the bowling of Jessie. The East line-up failed to partner the East skipper, Miles, as six ducks fell. The last pair batted admirably however as the score was taken from 71-9 to 93 before Fuzzard fell to the returning Jackman, leaving number 4 batsman, Miles, stranded on 14*.
