A Division - Paignton parade new paceman
SOUTH African paceman Fanie DeVilliers Junior will make a belated debut for Paignton tomorrow in the game at Braunton.

De Villiers – dad Fanie is a former South African opening bowler – was delayed getting over for the first game against Abbotskerswell last Saturday by a visa problem.

Problem resolved the youngster will take the new ball with George Benton at Kelsey. Mark Smith drops out.

Also out is Liam Bryan as skipper Connor Bryan goes for an extra spinning option.

Richard Ashworth will keep wicket, freeing Stephen George to get back to bowling.

Braunton were nine-wicket losers at Heathcoat last Saturday, not a result skipper Ian Roerts wants to dwell on too long.

“Mike Paine looked good considering he hasn't played for two years, but we

didn’t have enough runs which needs to improve quickly,” said Roberts.

“I was happy with our bowling and don't think that's going to b the problem this year,

“Young Dan Crocombe looked very good opening up and Jon Baglow just did his stuff, until getting whacked for 17 when he came back on other end.

“We will put this one to bed and move on. Heathcoat are a good side and it won’t only be us they roll this season.”

HEATHCOAT will be unchanged for their trip to Plymstock.

Skipper Sam Smith knows Plymstock – three-wicket winners at Barton - will be a totally different proposition.

“It is hard to pin-point improvement as we were not fully tested,” said Smith.

“However I am exited at the prospect of seeing Jean Rossouw (SA) and Mitch Baker (Aus) get a chance to showcase there skills that so far we have only seen in training.

“I am very aware we face a better side with increased batting depth and will have to adapt accordingly.”

Plymstock make two changes to the side which won at Barton, bringing in Steve Coomer to open the batting and batsman Callum Cload. Ollie Mulbery and George Barnicott are the players not available.

James Nicholls, Plymstock’s vice-captain, said Heathcoat are the fancied side in the division, but that won’t worry him.

“They are there to be beaten and will find it a lot different at our place,” said Nicholls.

ABBOTSKERSWELL entertain Sandford looking to get back on track after their narrow defeat at Paignton.

“We know if we play like we did last week we have a chance against any team in the this league” said skipper Richard Acton.

“We just have to be more confident with our batting and cut down on the bad balls and extras when we bowl.

“We've strengthened the bowling this week with Marcus Green, Dave Palmer and youngster Kyle Rich are all in.

“Sandford will be tough as they'll be looking to go straight back up, but at home and with the team spirit we showed last week I am confident we can win.”

PLYMPTON’S challenge against Hatherleigh at Harewood House is to raise their standards after losing at Sandford last Saturday.

Sandford chased 232 to win with five wickets in hand and time to spare, highlighting one or two areas for improvement in the eyes of skipper Jeremy Williams.

Nothing major is wrong, but some minor improvements will make a major difference.

“We were a few runs short when we batted, although it is hard to know how many is enough at Sandford as it can be a fast scoring ground,” said Williams.

“They batted better than us on a wicket that got flatter and there is not much you can do about that.

“What we can do better is bowl a bit more consistently and without the four-balls.

“At times we lacked control, but I would put that down to early season rustiness.”

Left-arm seamer Matt Gregory comes into the attack tomorrow now he is free of rugby commitments with Devonport Services.”

Hatherleigh captain Mark Lake has to make two changes to the side which romped home against Brixham last Saturday.

Simon Gillespie and Sean Letheran are both unavailable so Robert Cockwill and Andy Collier come in.

Lake would like more of the same, but is nothing if not a realist.

“Hopefully we can continue the good start with both bat and ball, and gain another positive result,” he said.

“However, I feel Plympton will be a tougher test than Brixham were.”

BRIXHAM are looking a bit threadbare in places for their meeting with Barton tomorrow.

Skipper Richard Ward is missing for the second week running – he is in Greece at his brother’s wedding – so Andrew Lewin will captain the side.

Lewin works in Manchester and is doing Brixham a huge favour by travelling home.

Also out is Rhys Dallow, who suffered a badly bruised hand fielding in the defeat at Hathherleigh last Saturday.

Joe Hyde (back problem) is missing and if Lee Upham plays he won’t be bowling at full pace owing to a hip complaint.

One bit of good news is that South African batsman Kyle Schreuder is now in the country and fully registered to play.

Barton are going to be without Andy McVeigh and Chris Needham, who are both working.

Luckily, there is no shortage of bowling in the 2nd XI so Tom Porter and Alex Hunt step straight up.

Skipper Adam Parker is looking for some improvements in the batting department after a patchy display against Plymstock ended up costing Barton the match.

“We scored 150 on a wicket that had nothing in it for the bowlers and that wasn’t enough runs,” said parker.

“We were 48 for five against Plymstock and luckily had some depth to come to get us out of jail.

“To be fair our batting goes all the way from 1-10 – you can’t really count on Stuart Bowker – but with the top four or five we have we ought to be making 200 plus most weeks.”
