A DIVISION
EXMOUTH go into the second half of the season 30 points clear at the top of the table after romping to a 161-run win over Plymouth.
Skipper Stuart Rintoul rightly figured Exmouth had enough at 253 for five and declared 10 overs early to buy some bowling time.
The bonus overs weren’t needed though as Plymouth were all out for 92 – and did well to get that many having been 38 for seven in reply.
Rintoul (88) was the Exmouth anchorman and shared in stands of 76 with Julian Page (49), 36 with Lawrence Greenway (24), 47 with Richard Arnold (35) and 76 with Dan Waistell, who went on to make 33 not out.
It all went wrong from the start for Plymouth, who were none for two as Matt Tarry (3-26) and Toby Ingham (3-29) got stuck in.
Martin Gill (25) and Jordan Hancock put on 43 for the eighth wicket, but the damage was done. Lawrence Greenway (2-9) wrapped things up.
Sandford beat Sidmouth 3rd XI by eight wickets to send the Seasiders closer to relegation.
Veteran Graham Munday (53) and youngster Dominic Bess (27) were the main run scorers for Sidmouth in their 150 for seven. Steve Cockram marked his return to form with four for 24.
Gary Abdoll (47) and Tom Sparrow (23) got Sandford up to 86 for two, leaving skipper Paul Smith (35no) and Steve Morish (38no) to tie up the loose ends.
Bess and Munday had a wicket each for Sidmouth, who are now 54 points adrift at the bottom.
For Sandford skipper Smith it was a job well done and a first toss won.
“I hadn’t won a toss all season and was seriously thinking of sending someone else out to do it,” said Smith.
“It was a solid team performance by our bowlers, backed up by some very good ground fielding.
“Nice to see two 17 year olds – Abdoll and Sparrow – give us such a good start with the bat.”
Chudleigh were frustrated by Braunton’s blockers in a drawn game at Kelsey.
Ed Forward (48) and Graeme Wilson (35) gave Chudleigh a 58-run start and with Paul Horne (32) weighing in they reached 202 for eight.
Jack Spicer (3-44) and Walid Iqbal (2-35) were the pick of the bowlers.
Wily old seamer Wilson then bowled 13 overs for figures of two for 20 as Braunton got bogged down from the start.
Dave Cresswell got his head down for 71, Jamie Matthews added 25 and Tom Rowbotham was in at the end on 25 in a total of 162 for six.
Mike Lievesley and Luke Adderley ran through the Bradninch batting as Barton went second in the A Division table with a 31-run win.
Barton were all out for 157 having run into trouble against Mark Perrott (4-41) and Simon Bailey (2-21).
Adam Last made 69 but the best of the rest with 14 was skipper Lievesley, whose last-wicket stand of 22 with Pete Gartrell made the scoreline a little more respectable.
Bradninch raced to 70 without loss in reply as Gary Newall (57) got on with it and Andy Nicholls (21) kept an end up.
The turning point was a brilliant diving catch by Adderley to send back Newall.
Wickets tumbled to Lievesley (5-28) and Adderley (4-31) as Bradninch slumped to 126 all out.
Victory puts Barton second behind leaders Exmouth, who handed out a 161-run hiding to Plymouth 3rd XI.
Tavistock skipper John McGahey dug his side out of a hole as they recovered from a patchy start to beat Plymstock by five wickets.
Tavistock appeared to have done the hard bit by keeping Plymstock to 145 for eight – Sam Willetts and Jamie Stephens taking three wickets each.
Sayed Ali (2-38) and Ian Whalley (2-33) had Tavvy wobbling at 63 for five until McGahey (62no) and Phil Stephens (27no) put on 86 to win it.
