A DIVISION 2nd XI VETERAN seamer Mike Lievesley ran through the Chudleigh batting as Barton went to the top of the A Division 2nd XI table with a 71-run win at Chudleigh.
Dale Adderley (72) and Stuart Bowker (36) were the leading scorers in Barton’s 167 for six. Matty Ball had three for 50 and former Barton seamer Graeme Wilson took two for 23 against his former club.
Chudleigh were bowled out for 96 in reply by Lievesley (6-26) and Pete Gartrell (2-32).
Only three Chudleigh batters reached double figures with Ben Ripley (16) making more than the others.
Barton, who were a force to be reckoned with in the Premier Division throughout the 80s and 90s, are going through a rebuilding phase with both senior teams operating in the A Division.
Cricket manager Jim Parker sees a strong second team as crucial to the long-term success of the club.
“Our aim in the past couple of seasons has been to consolidate at all levels of the club and that is the goal again this year,” said Parker.
“Anything other than that will be a bonus and we want to be playing at the highest possible level.
“We have placed great emphasis on our younger players and several like Dale (Adderley) are now beginning to come through.
It was good to see Tom Drake scoring runs in the firsts at the weekend as another example. But they know they still have a long way to go and are willing to work hard to improve their game.
“I believe there is no point looking at the club on a week-to-week or year-year basis. There has to be a much longer programme of planning and development. Hopefully young players like these will be around in five to 10 years time. That’s how I would like to measure success.”
SANDFORD went some way towards putting their opening day disaster at Barton behind them by taking the best of a draw off Tavistock.
Eight-man Sandford were well beaten at Barton, where they were dismissed for 60, but got their act together to make 261 for eight against the Moorlanders.
Although Tavvy held on for a draw – former Cornwall star Phil Stephens making 91 – Sandford skipper Paul Smith was a much happier chap.
“We performed far better with band and ball and in the field,” said Smith.
“After the debacle at Barton this was definitely a step in the right direction.”
There were runs all down the order for Sandford, staring with 79 between Smith and Steve Morris (58) for openers.
Ian Theedom belted 45 off 25 balls with five fours and three sixes as Sandford accelerated either side of drinks.
Geoff Murch (33) and Nigel Ashplant (32) added 70 at the end.
Stephens aside, only John McGahey (23) really got to grips with the Sandford bowling.
Ben Clement (3-36) and Steve Cockram (2-44) slowed Tavvy up mid-innings and after Stephens with at 150 for five with 15 to go the chase was discontinued.
Tavvy were 195 for seven when the overs ran out.
MATT Tarry took five for 55 to set Exmouth on course for a 128-run win at Plymstock.
Exmouth made 233 for nine with openers Stuart Rintoul (47) and Julian Page (43) clocking up the first 107, then Roger Wensley (30), Ashton Collinge (27) and Stuart Cross (30) moving the score along.
Plymstock were all out for 105 in reply with Tarry and George Greenway (3-21) doing the damage.
Jason Williams (24) top scored for the losers.
TEN-man Braunton 2nd XI were seven-wicket losers away to Plymouth 3rd XI.
Chris Luxton (23) was the only Braunton batsman to stay long as Braunton were bowled out for 73. Jordan Hancock (5-17) did most of the damage.
Chris Brigden was the only Bruanton bowler with much success as Plymouth knocked off the runs in just 22 overs with Al Stewart unbeaten on 41.
BRADNINCH stormed to a 10-wicket win over a Sidmouth 3rd XI side which arrived in some sort of disarray.
Sidmouth nosedived from 15 for none to 15 for three then lost the next three wickets all on 37 as they crashed to 58 all out.
Bowling-wise the damage was done by Andy Nichols (4-9) and Syed Hussain (4-21). Dave Gibson (16) had the best of a sorry set of scores.
Bradninch required less than 12 overs to knock off the runs with Nicholls (13no) and Gary Newall (40no) doing the necessary.
That’s two wins on the trot now for Bradninch, who are joint top with Barton.
As for Sidmouth, they are bottom and likely to stay there unless their results start improving.
