A DIVISION 2nd XI – WEEK THREE
SANDFORD captain Paul Smith was beaming after his side beat Bradninch by 78 runs in the derby date at Kensham Park.
Tom Sparrow was given 15 minutes notice that he would be opening and the 17-year-old justified Smith’s faith in him by making a maiden half century in a total of 220 all out.
Smith (40) was at the other end helping Sparrow put on 69 for the first wicket. Jason Matten made 37 and at six wickets down Ian Theedom (37) and Mike Canning (20) put on 58.
Mark Perrott (5-53) took the Bradninch bowling accolade, although Phil Chappell (2-29) and Luke Wrightson (2-29) both did their bit.
Bryn Jones (42) and Luca Fencl (21) made the only scores of note as Bradninch were bowled out for 142 in reply.
Only batting with 10 didn’t help – Rob Acton was forced to retire hurt – but as Bradninch were 84 for six then it probably made little difference.
Matten capped a man-of-the-match show with four for 53 and Steve Cockram took three for 26.
“It was another good batting display, then we bowled straight on pitch with variable bounce,” said a happy Smith.
Sidmouth stay rooted to the foot of the A Division table after crashing to a 10-wicket defeat against new leaders Plymouth..
Ten-man Sidmouth were all out for 90 in just 35 overs with Bruce Robson (25) and Issac Thomas (20) making the only scores of note.
Old stagers Phil Barrow and Martin Gill had three wickets each with Jordan Hancock mopping up two cheapies at the end.
Pymouth openers Rob McPherson (40no) and Jon Varcoe (37no) knocked off the runs required in just 18.3 overs.
Varcoe and McPherson hit seven boundaries each and gave no chances.
Sidmouth are now nine points adrift of Braunton, who lost by 37 runs against former leaders Barton.
Dale Adderley (44) and Richard Farkins (50) pointed Barton towards a total of 174 all out, helped by Jimmy Hamilton (20) giving Farkins a helping hand adding 60 for the fourth wicket.
Taylor Latham (4-25) and Dan Crocombe (2-15) were the pick of the Braunton bowlers.
Braunton were shot out for 127 in reply by Barton veterans Mike Lievesley (4-25) and Pete Gartrell (4-48).
After Jack Spicer (31) was sixth out at 99, Braunton fell apart.
To get out of the drop zone altogether, Sidmouth have to get past Chudleigh, who put up a brave fight before losing by 37 runs to Plymstock.
Plymstock were 90 for none before Chudleigh made a breakthrough with Jason Williams (93) and James Collins (43) going well.
Graeme Wilson (2-33) and Ben Ripley (2-39) got the run rate down as Plymstock slowed to 195 for seven.
Chudleigh ran into serious problems against Max Thomas (2-44), Liam Savage (5-58) and Ryan Massey (2-32).
At 86 for six it became a result job with Ripley (39), Mike Trout (24) and Sean Newland (39) getting the score up to 158 and earning three bonus points in the process.
There was a thrilling finish at the Ring where Exmouth were two runs short on the chase against Tavistock.
Nick Goodchilde made 31 and John McGahey 30 before hitting a full-toss to mid-wicket as Tavistock laboured to 166 for nine.
Lawrence Greenway had tidy figures of four for 27 and Patrick Hall took two for 30.
Tavvy made Exmouth work for their runs with James McGahey going for 33 in 11 overs while Jamie Stephens (2-39) and Simon Gliddon (2-33) took wickets.
George Greenway (21), Julian Page (37) made inroads into the total and Stuart Cross took Exmouth close with 58 before he was run out.
Exmouth needed four to win off the last ball, could only run through for two and had to settle for a draw at 165 for seven.
