Alphas hope for Beta fortunes under James

ALPHINGTON have turned to former captain Paul James to take charge again for the season ahead.

Spin-bowling all-rounder James was last captain in 2008 and since then Stuart Shaw and Aussie Mark Porter have both had a go. James is also club coach.

Shaw got the Alphas out of the B Division at the first attempt in 2009, but down they went last season after Porter replaced Shaw midway through the season.

James played in the same England U14 team as future Test stars Ian Bell and Matt Prior. He has played for Essex 2nd XI, Worcestershire 2nd XI and Devon on one occasion.

A new season brings a new challenge and a new chairman in Steve Baxter, the father of 1st XI regular Tom Baxter who won’t be playing quite so much this season having joined the Army.

Baxter’s aim is to make Alphington a strong and growing club.

To do that, Baxter believes recruitment is vital.

“We would welcome anyone who is interested in playing cricket in Exeter,” said Baxter.

“Hopefully we can attract good players who have moved into the area or simply want to play at one of the top clubs in the city.

“We are a friendly club with a long history and have three men’s teams - two on Saturdays and one on Tuesday evenings - and four youth teams at Under 10, 11, 12 and 14.
