Anning runs through Cornwall top order

PACEMAN Trevor Anning (above) bowled Devon into a commanding position against Cornwall at Exeter with a six-wicket haul on day two.

Cornwall, one run ahead on first innings, were reduced to 96 for six second time around by Exmouth paceman Anning before fighting back in the final session last night.

An unbeaten 42 from Tom Hughes allied to Neil Curnow’s gutsy 15 not out got Cornwall up to 160 for six at the close.

Curnow batted largely one-handed having suffered a badly bruised wrist on day one when he was pinned by Devon seamer Mark Orchard.

Devon will want early wickets this morning to finish Cornwall off sooner rather than later.

With rain in the air there is plenty of potential for time to be lost which will hinder chances of a result.

Devon will also be aware seam bowlers operating with a new ball are a threat on this particular pitch – and Cornwall will get to use one sometime today.

Anning bowled in all the right areas to cause Cornwall problems, finding the edge three times and hitting the stumps twice.

Scott Harvey and Christian Purchase were both caught behind by Matt Thompson while Taylor Williams collected a ‘pair’ in the match when he was we caught at slip by Rob Holman.

Williams has been out three times for nothing against Devon this season – Anning got him in the cup at Redruth last month – and the annoyance was too much for the young Cornishman to bear on the way back to the dressing room.

Some hefty blows with his bat on the brick-built pavilion steps were the outward signs of Williams’s frustration.

Matt Robins played on, skipper Tom Sharp got a good ball on 49 that bowled him and Dan Davis was lbw to a delivery that didn’t bounce that high.

Anning had figures of six for 41 overnight and passed 150 Championship wickets for Devon getting there.

If Anning was the star when Devon bowled, Josh Bess and Rhys Davies were the men of the moment with the bat.

Devon, 61 for three overnight, reached 263 all out in their first innings in reply to Cornwall’s 264 all out the day before

Seb Benton was first out, caught at slip off Ahmed for 31 , followed at 134 for five by Matt Thompson in similar fashion.

Josh Bess was the middle order anchorman, making a patient 64 off 160 balls with nine fours and a six.

Matt Golding chipped in with 21, but it was debutant Rhys Davies who really caught the eye with a maiden Minors half-century coming in at number eight.

Davies hit six sixes on his way to 53 – one of them of Ahmed which broke tiles on the pavilion roof.

Overnight: Cornwall 264 (S C Hocking 55, S A Harvey 50, N S Curnow 32no; J J Bess 3-41, T S Anning 3-47) & 160-6 (T G Sharp 49, T P S Hughes 42no; T S Anning 6-41), Devon 263 (J J Bess 64, R W Davies 55; S Ahned 4-102, T F Sharp 4-91).
