Green follows in illustrious footsteps as DCL young player of the year

EXETER’S Ben Green was named young player of the year for 2014 at the Francis Clark Devon Cricket League annual meeting.

Green, who was 17 last September, has only just returned from an England U17 training camp in Dubai.

And Green is due back in the Emirates later this month as a member of the England Development squad playing a series against Pakistan.

Green – Devon’s youth player of the year for the last two summers – had an outstanding 2014 for club side Exeter, Somerset 2nd XI, Devon in the Minor Counties competition and England U17s.

He was the Devon Cricket Board’s youth player of the year again in 2014 for the second year running.

His cricket career started with Clyst St George and was nurtured from the age of 10 onwards by the Devon youth system.

Somerset have been working with the Exeter School pupil for the past couple of years in their Academy.

Previous winners of the award include Mark Lathwell and Chris Read, both of whom went on to play for the full England side, Matt Wood (Somerset/Notts), Chris Metters (Warwickshire), Lewis Gregory (Somerset) and the Overton twins (Somerset and England U19s).

Among the other trophies handed out was a lifetime achievement award to league president Graham Shears (pictured, left).

Shears, a retired builder and former Chudleigh player, was involved in the creation of the league back in 1972 and served as its first secretary until 1978.

Shears became chairman in 1982 following the retirement of Exmouth’s Bob Bridges and stayed in the chair until 2002, when he became president.

The league’s player of the year award went to Sidmouth all-rounder Josh Bess, As he is currently playing cricket in Australia it was collected on his behalf by club chairman David Mansfield.

Paignton captain Connor Bryan walked off with two awards. Bryan was there as Paignton’s promotion-winning captain to collect the A Division champions trophy.

And he was back on his feet later in the evening to pick up the club of the year award for the A Division, which is awarded based on marks from umpires.

Ipplepen captain Keith Wakeham took delivery of the C Division winners’ trophy after steering his side to the title.

Pens were club of the year in the C Division, which meant another trophy to take home.

Babbacombe sent former captain Paul Bates along to receive the D Division champions’ cup.

The Walls Hill side won their third successive promotion as champions in 2014 – a feat never achieved before in the 40-year history of the league.

Plenty of teams have gone up three years running, but never as champions.

Chelston captain Mark Faulkner was there to collect the F Division champions’ cup as the club enters a new chapter in its history.

For the Torquay-based club will be merging with Kingskerswell for the 2015 season and running three teams in the league, split between Kerswell’s ground and Chelston’s Torre Valley North home.
