Tavvy lose again as Axminster win on chase

TAVISTOCK lost for the second week running when they went down by six wickets at Axminster.

Tavvy might have feared they were in for a difficult afternoon when opener Aaron Churchill went first ball to Nick Taylor (3-25).

A stand of 55 for the second wicket between Ian Gray (32) and Shaun Daymond (24) was as good as it got for Tavistock as they were spun out for 134.

Gary Larcombe twirled away for figures of five for 27 and former Devon U21 spinner Dave Field took two for 31.

Axminster got away to a flier with skipper Tristan Wakeley (50) and Dan Murnane (28) hoisting 81.

Although Daymond took two for 38, Axminster were on their way and Joel Seward’s 25 not out wrapped things up.

Tavistock’s only saving grace was that second-placed Bideford didn’t; get significantly closer as they lost to Shobrooke Park.

“We didn’t bat well enough, we threw wickets away and we didn’t bat our overs,” said skipper Daymond. “Another 30 runs would have made it interesting…”
