Axminster skipper Paul Miller is very clear about the season ahead for the Cloakham Lawns outfit, writes Stephen Birley.
The long-serving Miller says: “Survival is going to be the target for us. Anything more this coming season would be a big bonus.”
Axminster have been hit by the loss of four key players with the departures to Seaton of Joel Seward and Robbie Prior coupled with the news that both Tristan Wakeley and Gary Larcombe are not going to be playing this year.
Wakeley, last year’s skipper, is about to become a dad and is looking to spend more time at home whilst Larcombe is committing himself to work.On the plus side Axminster have welcomed father and son duo John and Niall Waterhouse from Seaton. Miller says of their arrival at Cloakham Lawns:
“It’s a big ask for them to both make the step up and hit the ground running, but they are both fine players with bat and ball and will certainly bring something to us.”Miller also expects youth to play its part at the club this season. He says: “Matt Pyle is home from University and so available from game one. He may miss the last few, but he is going to be a big player for us I am sure.
"Then there’s the other youngster such as Sam Farrow and Bradley Cross whilst, at the other end of the age spectrum you have the likes of Nick Taylor, David Field and Alex Wraight.”Wraight will act as Miller’s vice captain. Miller summed up the expectation at the club by saying: “Like may cricket clubs we have a die hard number of senior players and then quite a gap to the up and coming younger generation.
"The latter are the future and there’s no doubt that in the coming seasons the youngsters are going to get every opportunity to make their way in senior cricket.”He rounded things off saying: “I’ll not be putting pressure on players for I want them to enjoy themselves whilst being mindful that it is our collective responsibility to keep the side in the B Division. If we are still part of the division at the season’s end then I’ll consider it a job well done.”
