Benton and Dawson among the runs

A strong Exmouth side were too powerful for as 10-man Bradninch in a pre-season meeting at the Maer.

Exmouth plundered 279-6 from their 40-overs. Seb Benton top scored with a 54-ball, 18 boundary 88.

Benton put on 89 in nine overs with skipper Richard Baggs (33). David Lye chipped in with 50 and Bob Dawson, back with Exmouth for the first time since 1996, weighed in with 66.

Dan Hardy (2-37) was the pick of the visiting bowlers.

The Mid Devon men, relegated fro the Premier Division at the end of last season, gave a first 1st XI start to 15-year-old Will Birley and he sent down two overs which would have brought him a wicket had  a catch, one of seven put down, not been spilled in the deep!

The Bradninch reply was underpinned by a superb half-century from the club’s overseas player this year, New Zealander Gian Botha who struck a run-a-ball 74.

Opener Dan Hardy was the best of the rest with 37 as Bradninch closed on 165-6.

Six Exmouth bowlers claimed a wicket each, Amdy Buzza was one of them and he also held two catches.

The game was halted with an over to go after Exmouth skipper Baggs pulled up lame with a hamstring strain.

Exmouth 279-6 (Benton 88, Dawson 66, Lye 50; D Hardy 2-37); Bradninch 165-6 (G Botha 74, D Hardy 37; Buzza 1-6, Chappell 1-18).
