New Whitchuch skipper sets his agenda

Whitchurch Wayfarers have appointed 19-year-old Billy Barriball as 1st Xi captain for 2015.

Martyn Credicott has ably led the side for the past six years, but indicated his wish to stand down at the end of last season.

Three years ago, Credicott took the lead promoting a core of younger players into the 1st XI.

As many as five U16s were given the chance to establish themselves as first-team players and develop accordingly.

After narrowly avoiding relegation in 2012, Wayfarers were promoted in 2013.

Barriball led the way with 750 runs, 21 wickets and a couple of narrow wins as captain, covering Credicott when he was injured.

“Last season proved a more challenging year but the team, still with a core of six U18s, avoided relegation on the last day of the season,” said Whitchurch secretary Neil Tamblin.

“With regionalisation now introduced in the Devon League, 2015 promises to be tougher than any before.”

Billy follows in the footsteps of his dad, Nigel, who was 1st XI captain in 2007.

The new captain finds himself in charge of a team benefiting from promotion into the C Division as part of the regionalisation process voted in by clubs before Christmas.

Having got into the C Division for the first time since 1992, when they finished bottom a year after winning promotion, Barriball wants to consolidate above all else.

“My main focus as the as the new captain will be to secure a solid position in the league for the first half of the season, then from that we can begin to progress,” said Barriball.

“Throughout my whole time playing for the 1st XI the team’s main target has been to promote the youngsters and push to try to push for promotion to the C division.

“Now we are here under convenient circumstances for us, I will do all I can to keep us there.”

Barriball isn’t the first teenage captain in the Devon League, but he is Whitchurch’s first.

He believes previous experience as Credicott’s understudy will prove useful.

“It might have been a bit intimidating becoming captain at a young age if I had never lead the team before,” he said.

“Considering I have been privileged enough to be captain a few times, and also having played with the rest of the team for several years, I believe they will give me all the backing I need to get the job done.”
