Barton back in promotion frame

BARTON are right back in the A Division promotion mix following a nine-wicket romp at Abbotskerswell.

Abbots’ batting was a catalogue of disaster from start to finish, once Denovan Ekstraal (3-27), Tom Porter and Mark Gilmour (2-12) got stuck into them.

Gareth Penrice was the only Abbots’ batter to make a double-figure score in an all-out total of 81 – and he went in at 55 for seven!

Tom Drake (3-22) cleared out the stragglers as Abbots were dispatched in the 28th of their overs.

Barton only needed 14.2 overs to knock off the runs – and almost made it without loss.

Openers Shaun Needham – he hit 10 fours in a quick 53 – and Scott Bellamy (20no) reached 81 before Matt Beasant trapped the former lbw.

Drake didn’t have to face a ball as Bellamy nudged the winning single two balls later.

Barton are back up to second in the constantly changing A Division and skipper Adam Parker was delighted by the way his side got there.

“It was a superb result for us at a place where we have historically struggled to get a result,” said Parker.

“Our bowlers were excellent and all clicked together at the right time. Denovan bowled with some real pace and aggression – and at times was unplayable.

“The other guys stepped up and followed suit with some tight bowling. Results went our way and we are now back up in the mix.”

Richard Acton, the Abbotskerswell captain, had no complaints.

We were outplayed and were never really in the game,” said Acton.

“Our batting once again failed as none of our top order got themselves in and played the gritty innings the situation required.

“We will regroup ready for next week when big improvements need to be made with our batting.

“I am backing the guys to find form again and am certain the collapse we saw against Barton will be a one off.”
