DEVON youth cricket has found an unusual ally in its constant battle for funds — Basil Fawlty.
A new drive has been launched to raise money for the Devon Cricket Board Youth Association, which provides cricket for hundreds of youngsters across Devon every year.
The Gleneagles Hotel in Torquay — the inspiration for the world-famous Fawlty Towers TV show — has stepped forward to do its bit to help.
Every club playing in the Devon League has been approached to take part in the new initiative.
They are being asked to sell draw tickets with the proceeds going towards their own club funds and the youth association.
Management at the Gleneagles have donated a short break at the hotel as one of the top prizes.
Plymouth-based Alan Swift, who manages the county U15 year team and is one of the driving forces behind the new campaign, said: “This is all part of a new fund-raising effort to help youngsters across the county.
“We are extremely grateful to the Gleneagles Hotel. Lots of people have been extremely generous.”
The youth association organises games against other counties and festivals at various age groups.
Retired teacher Swift takes a Devon U15 development squad to South Africa every February. This year’s tour leaves on Wednesday.
The tour party comprises Jack Cherrington (Hatherleigh), Callum Cload (Plympton), Michael Cousens (Tavistock & Harrow), Jack Dart (Whimple), Rhys Davies (Tavistock), Paul Heard (North Devon), Alex Hunt (Barton), Hallam Kerton (Plymstock), Sam Loud (Ottery), Josh Mailing (Ivybridge), Lawrence May (Barnstaple & Pilton), Dylan Penberthy (Heathcoat), Jack Popham (Barntaple & Pilton) and Henry Thompson (Exeter).

The development squad plays a mixture of one and two-day games against youth sides in Western Province.
Another role of the youth association is managing the development of girls’ and ladies’ cricket in the county.
Two of the county’s rising lady cricketers – Plympton’s Amara Carr and Sidmouth’s Jodie Dibble – have recently been named in the England U19 development squad to tour South Africa in April.
