CHUDLEIGH won by 22 runs at Barton to oust the Cricketfield Road side from the top of the table and grab it for themselves.Barton must have thought it was their day after reducing Chudleigh to 57 for five – Andy McVeigh (2-13), Tom Drake (2-17) and Stuart Bowker (2-54) all among the wickets.
Diovan Marias started the comeback with 49 the skipper Jon Martin kept it going with 35 not out after coming in at 92 for six.
Chudleigh’s total of 144 for nine looked well within Barton’s reach – especially after Harry Moores (36) helped overcome a dodgy start to reach 70 for three.
A wicket fell to the first ball bowled – and two more in the first eight overs.
Tight fielding caused a run out, after that a combination off good bowling and fielding won the game for Chudleigh.
Then Rob Clarke (3-30) and Jack Vittles (3-26) spread panic in the ranks as Barton slumped to 122 all out.
“With no other games being played in the league it was an important win which puts us back on top and also creates a bit of distance to the rest,” said Chudleigh captain Jon Martin
“I would like to commend Barton for their efforts in getting the game on and it was a very good game of cricket.
“Ironically, and probably unfairly, Bartonwould've picked up one more point and held their lead at the top if they had called it off.”
Chudleigh are defending a four-point lead over Barton when they travel to Barnstaple on Saturday.
Barton will be looking to eat into that deficit when Alphington are their guests at Cricketfield Road.
