B Division: Thors win in dramatic last over

B DIVISION

CHAGFORD held on for a draw against Barnstaple & Pilton after abandoning the chase early on.

Lawrence May followed a ton against Dartington & Totnes with another hundred as B&P eased to 214 for nine. May, a Devon U16 player, has hardly featured for B&P until now as he has been involved in school matches at Kings Taunton.

Derek Lammonby (5-48) and Steve Sizmur (3-39) were the most effective of the Chagford bowlers.

Other than Henry Gordon-Lennox with 46, there was nothing much to report from the Chagford batters, other than last pair Duncan Christophers and Dave penberthy tapping back the last 11 balls to earn a draw at 136 for nine.

Ross Burbridge had three for 21 and there were two wickets each for Brady Saunders and Henry McEndoo.

CLYST St George had four balls to beat Axminster but couldn’t do it and had to settle for a winning draw.

With the two sides having won just three of the 22 games played between them before their Bohea Field meeting, it was perhaps no surprise that neither could force victory.

The hosts batted first and closed on 209-5 with all five wickets falling to the in-from Alex Wraight.

Chris Ferro (51) and Matt Cook (62) notched 120 for the first Clyst wicket, then George Randall-Johnson (38no) and Tim Read (25) rapping 52 for the fifth.

The run chase went the distance with Axminster closing on 200-9 led there by Danny Larcombe (50) and Rob Walker (45no), whose stand of 70 for the eighth wicket made a game of it after Axes laboured to 109 for seven.

Last man Nick Taylor survived four balls from Pete Andrews to earn the draw.

The nine points that Axminster took from the game leaves them 16 points above second bottom Chagford.

Clyst stay bottom, 27 points behind Axminster, and with plenty to do to stave off relegation.

SOUTH Devon crept into second place in the B Division by beating Dartington & Totnes by six wickets.

Chudleigh were second going into the last round of fixtures, but lost ground by only drawing with leaders Plymstock, a result that played into South Devon’s hands.

For South Devon (171pts) not only went past Chudleigh (165) they also gained ground on Plymstock (179).

South Devon had just the start they wanted when D&T opener Ryan Stevenson went first ball to Peter Vorster (3-30).

Kalon Veale made 52 and Angus Wilson 24 as D&T struggled to 160 for nine. Vorster and James Hart (3-29) were the leading wicket takers, aided by Tom Carter (2-43).

For South Devon it was relatively routine. Vorster (37) laid the foundations, then Dave Baldock (28no) and in-form Adrian Hewings (45no) saw it through.

TERTIUS Gouws cracked an unbeaten century as Chudleigh racked up 218 for nine against Plymstock.

Gouws hit 13 fours and three sixes on his way to exactly 100 not out as Chudleigh recovered from 57 for four.

Gouws and Rob Clarke (39) turned things around for Plymstock with a stand of 89 for the fifth wicket.

Pick of the bowlers were Jack Thomas (3-59) and Morgan Parkinson (2-28).

Plymstock will probably see it as one that got away as they were 82 for two at 23 overs and 108 for four at 28.

The batters got bogged down after Dom Wood (43) went and meandered to a draw with Josh Hocking unbeaten on 69 not out in a total of 175 for four.

WHAT a finish! Never in his wildest dreams could Thorverton skipper Ali Fury have imagined the way his side were destined to win at Tavistock.

Chasing 256 to win is always a bit of a tall order – even on an undulating pitch like Tavvy’s with numerous downhill pistes!

Tavvy had helped themselves to 254 for five with Aaron Churchill (76) and Ian Grey (85) leading the way in a stand of 185 for the first wicket.,

Thors’ Brad Charlton (3-55) picked up some consolation scalps in the last 15 overs.

Fury belted 80 off 84 balls as Thors chased for all they were worth. His stand of 97 with George Greed (75) made it interesting…

Dave Downham (2-59) and Lee Baker (2-47) slowed Thors down for a while and with six overs left the target was 62 to win.

Then Will Denford got involved, laying into Shaun Daymond with no mercy.

Thors got dwn too the last over from Daymond needing 21 to win. Daymond bowled, Denford missed and the ball grazed the leg-stump without removing the bail on its way to the boundary for four.

Denford didn’t mess around after that let off. He hit the next three balls for six to win the game with two deliveries to spare. His own score was 51 not out off 29 balls.
