B DIVISION
Chudleigh narrowed the gap between themselves and second-placed South Devon to a point with a nail-biting one-wicket win over Barnstaple by one wicket.
There was no sign of the drama to come as Barum reached a respectable if gettable 198 for six. George McEndoo (36) and Brady Saunders (27) posted 52 for the first wicket and with Andy Barton (21), Jack Popham (33) and Tom Popham (25) all chipping in a total of 198 for six was reached.
Tertius Gouws (3-40) and Jack Vittles (2-51) were the pick of the bowlers.
Chudleigh looked dead and buried at 125 for nine when last man Vittles went out to join injured opener Lance Ames, who was batting with a runner.
Steve Moore (3-15), Henry McEndoo (2-45) and Saunders (3-46) appeared to have put the skids under Chudleigh good and proper.
An early finish seemed on the cards, but B&P hadn’t reckoned on Ames and Vittles going for the runs.
Down came the target until the last over from Saunders arrived with Chudleigh needing nine to win. Vittles took a single then Ames hoisted a six then bashed a four to win it with a couple of overs to spare.
Leaders Plymstock beat Tavistock by 20 runs in a close-fought affair at Dean Cross.
Chagford edged a little closer to safety in the B Division when they squeezed out a seven-run win over Dartington & Totnes.
Things looked bleak for the Moorlanders after they had been bowled out for 111 by Ryan Stevenson (6-24) and Bertus Loots (4-45).
Billy Searle and Matt Bowes both made 19 for Chagford. No one else got past 10.
D&T have been creeping up the table in recent weeks and would have fancied their chances of a third win in four starts. Chagford had other ideas though.
After Kyle Blanchard went for a patient 36, and Loots got out for 15, Jeremy Christophers (4-16) and Searle (4-18) worked through the middle order.
Seventy-two for five became 104 all out when Christophers trapped D&T captain Harold Stevenson lbw for 15.
Chagford are still second from bottom, but moved within 12 points of Axminster, who drew a nail-biter with second-placed South Devon.
South Devon went in fits and starts to 206 for four in 50 overs with Pete Vorster finishing unbeaten on 72.
Mark Hulse (55) and Tom Carter (34) gave South Devon a 100-run start in 24 overs and with wickets in hand a 250-plus total
Alex Wraight (2-41) and Gary Larcombe (2-55) slowed South Devon up and with four overs left they were 145 for four.
Then Vorster cut lose and with Dax Oliver (15no) rotating the strike, South Devon put on 60 in the last four overs.
That burst came back to haunt Axminster, who ran out of time at 202 for seven. In a real roller-coaster of a game, Axminster got down to the last over from Vorster (2-42) needing six to win and couldn’t get them.
Larcombe made 64 and Dave Murnane 50. Their stand of 80 for the fourth wicket wasn’t quite enough.
Young spinner James Hart picked up three for 37 on his home league debut.
Thorverton made a hash of their run chase against bottom side Clyst St George and what looked like being a win turned into a losing draw.
Clyst scored consistently all down the order with Chris Ferro (65), Steve Bourke (47), Mark Knight (30) and George Randall-Johnson (30) all chipping in towards a total of 221 for six. Thors’ cause wasn’t helped by losing seamer Jake Crouch with an injury on the morning of the match.
Thors’ skipper Ali Fury led the run chase with 60 and at 100 for two with 15 overs to go all looked well. The Fury got out and the middle order collapsed.
Said Fury: “James Maxwell and Blake Charlton took us to needing 16 off five overs with four wickets left, then James got a good ball.
“Nat Davey got one that rolled and bowled him, then Blake was caught on the boundary trying to finish it which left the two Choules boys to shut up shop. Pretty disappointing really.”
Chris Cook took three for 42 for Clyst.
Dom Wood made 72 and Matt Smith 24 as Plymstock reached 162 for five, but the bottom half collapsed to 178 all out. Sean Daymond (4-19) and Lee Baker (3-24) took the wickets.
Tavvy were all out for 158 in reply with Jack Thomas (3-37) and Morgan Parkinson (3-43) leading the way.
Tavvy were 68 for six when Cleeve (39) joined Marc Webber (34) and their stand of 58 came close to saving the match.
