B Division: Chudleigh slip back

 B DIVISION

CHUDLEIGH dropped further off the top two in the B Division when they slipped to a three-wicket defeat against Dartington & Totnes.

D&T were one of just two sides to beat Chudleigh so far this season and hopes were high of some revenge in the return leg at Kate Brook.

That always looked unlikely though after Ryan Stevenson (3-18) and Will Gornall (3-30) helped blow Chudleigh away for 1116.

Having been 17 for four after an early burst from Stevenson, who went on to bowl 13 overs, Chudleigh had Rob Clarke (27) and Jon Martin (17) to thank for getting something remotely defendable on the board.

Stevenson (21), Bertus Loots (21) and Kyle Blanchard (21) got D&T going in the right direction.

Martin (2-21), Clarke (3-29) and Tertius Gouws (2-36) bowled Chudlegh back into contention and when D&T dipped to 113 for seven hopes were high of an unlikely win.

Harold Stevnson (10no) and Joe Hocking made sure there were no slips

Chudleigh are now 14 points behind leaders Plymstock and six behind second-placed South Devon.

“We play South Devon this Saturday and that is our chance to claw all those points back,” said skipper Martin.

South Devon skipper Dave Knowles was seriously down in the dumps after his side finished three runs short on the chase against Barnstaple & Pilton.

Eleven points for a losing draw was a reasonable haul, but Knowles couldn’t shake off the what-might-have-been feeling afterwards.

“It is the second time this season on a day when Chudleigh lose that we haven’t been able to win,” said Knowles.

“If we are going to get promoted this season – and that is our aim – we seem determined to go about it the hard way.

“We should not have let Barnstaple get to 199 all out as we had them 102 for six.

“That wouldn’t have mattered quite so much if we hadn’t slowed up when we batted at the wrong time.

“Thirty to win off the last three overs was a few too many and to get as close a we did really brought home how we let the game get away from us.”

Pete Vorster took six for 49 to send B&P slithering, but knocks from Danny Donovan (39), Steve Moore (29) and Jack Popham (28)got them off the hook.

South Devon opener Tom Carter batted through for an unbeaten 99, and Nick Hulse made 41, but there were no other double-figure scores in South Devon’s 196 for six in reply.

Moore (2-29) and George McEndoo (2-59) had the best of the bowling figures.

CHRIS Cook performed a hat-trick for the first time in his career as bottom side Clyst St George held leaders Plymstock to a draw.

Cook, captain for the day as son Matt was sidelined with an ankle injury, took the last three wickets to fall as Plymstock were bowled out for 287.

Dom Wood made a fine 129 at the top of the order, but wickets fell after he went with Cook taking six for 49. his hat-trick comprised on bowled, one caught behind and an lbw to finish.

George Randall-Johnson (56), Chris Ferro (55) and Pete Andrews (52) all made half centuries in Clyst’s reply of 220 for five.

Clyst picked up 12 points – the best you can get for a losing draw – which left sidelined skipper Cook in reflective mode.

“It does make you think had we played this well earlier in the season we probably wouldn’t be where we are now,” said Cook junior.

Axminster edged closer to B Division safety with a winning draw over relegation rivals Thorverton.

Batting first Gary Larcombe registered an excellent century. Apart from Larcombe’s 105 there was also a useful 47 from Joel Seward as the hosts closed on 208-7.

The Crouch brothers – Jake (2-51) and Gwillam (3-57) – took the bowling honours forThors.

The visitors were then left hanging on with last pair Jake Choules and Jakc Crouch at the wicket on 174-9 at stumps.

Ben Line – 15 years old and one to watch out for – top scored on 41 for Thorverton.

Larcombe completed a fine all-round contribution with 2-32 and ex-Devon bowler Mark Richards rolled back the years to bag a brace of wickets as well.

The 15 point haul leaves Paul Miller’s men sitting 24 points clear of second bottom Chagford with five to play.

Chagford drifted 16 points away from safety in the bottom two when they could only draw with Tavistock.

Ian Gray (60) and Dave Manning (53) both hit half centuries for Tavvy in a total of 192 for six. Steve Sizmur marked promotion from the second team with three for 61.

Chagford slumped to 51 for six in reply as Chris Hutchings (4-35) and Lee Baker (2-42) tore through them.

Jeremy Christophers (430 stopped the rot, then Paul Penberthy (21no) and Colin Mortimore (18no) blocked out for the draw.
