B DIVISION 2nd XI – WEEK FOUR
BRIXHAM are still looking for their first B Division win of the season after going down by seven wickets at misty Yelverton.
The 36-over game started late due to bad weather and was over early after Yelverton knocked off 140 to win.
Brixham got just the start they didn’t want when opener Tom Hopper was dismissed in the first over. Dan Franklyn, Mark Coysh and Jack Thomas all went in short order as the visitors slipped to 30 for four.
Rhys Dallow watched it all going wrong from the other end and made a good 37 before he was fifth out with the score on 45.
At 46 for six after 18 overs – Andy Simpson didn’t last long – Brixham were in big trouble.
A stand of 74 between Wes Fowler and Sam Thomas for the seventh wicket gave Brixham some hope.
Tony Carter (4-34) finally broke the partnership with the score on 120, bowling Thomas for a well played 37.
Fowler squeezed another 19 runs in the remaining overs and ended up unbeaten on 49.
Yelverton's openers Pete Garland and Andy Taylor started slowly, but their partnership gradually developed, passing 50 in the 12th over and 100 in the 26th.
The partnership was finally broken with the score on 129 when Garland was bowled by Fowler for 74.
After being padded-up for two hours, Pat Hobbs departed without scoring with the score on 129, comprehensively bowled by Dallow.
Taylor (43) was run out with Yelverton four short of victory leaving Gerry Keen (5 no) to finish things off.
Winless Brixham are one off the bottom and desperate for a win when they entertain fellow strugglers Shobrooke Park this Saturday.
ALPHINGTON are up to third in the B Division following the best of a draw with Kingsbridge.
Faknar Hussain (71), Tom Baxter (63) and the consistent Matt Barnes (51) all contributed towards a hefty total of 299 for nine.
Will Pike’s three for 33 was the best of the bowling for Kingsbridge.
Veteran Tony Treeby (61) and Oliver Etoe (43) led Kingsbridge to 204 for six in reply. Tim Collier (2-33) was the pick of the Alphiongton bowlers.
STEVE Harding showed what he thought of being left out of the 1st XI by smashing 98 for Heathcoat in their drawn game against Abbotskerswell.
Harding, Henry Frankpitt (45no) and Matt Parkes (33) all helped themselves to runs in a Heathcoat tally of 251 for five.
Gary Day had three for 67 and Hayden Crocker two for 38 for Abbots, who were a long way adrift at 168 for seven when the overs ran out. Sean Green made 71 and Noah Tobias 36.
Lee Dixon (3-17) and David Penberthy (3-41) bowled tidily for Heathcoat.
MATT Blackmore hit an unbeaten 126 as South Devon raced to 238 for two against visiting Stoke Gabriel. Dax Oliver returned for form with 58.
Stoke were good value for a draw as they replied with 209 for seven. Steve Tolley (46) and Dave Higgins (47) made early runs with Jeff Baker (33) and J Harris (33no) keeping the board ticking over.
SHOBROOKE Park crashed to a fourth straight defeat when they went down by 17 runs to Bideford.
Shobrooke only avoided relegation last season by three points and are in for another struggle to stay up if they carry on losing.
Dave Jolliffe (4-24) and Pete Rose (3-17) appeared to have done the hard bit by dismissing Bideford for 107.
Only Rose (34) made much headway in the reply though as Dave Staddon (3-10) and Darren Willcocks (3-26) shot Park out for 90.
