IT was back to the serious stuff and an ECB encounter with Berkshire at Barton CC.
The visitors opted to bat first and ran up a formidable total of 189-6 from their 40 overs.
Opening bowlers Ollie Reed (2-42) and Alex Hartridge (2-18) bowled well early on to make some inroads into the Berkshire batting order.
Berkshire put the pressure on late on and probably scored 30 or so runs too many in their last 10 overs.
Devon openers Noah Wright (35) and Harvey Sargent got Devon off to a flying start.
When Wright went it was left to Sidmouth’s Sargent to try to lead Devon home to victory. He ended up with a patient 58 from 72 balls and spanning 105 minutes.
When Sagent was given out lbw, Devon suffered a batting collapse with only one other player reaching double figures.
Last pair Ollie Reed and Alex Hartridge fought right to the end as the Berkshire finger nails became shorter. But the hosts eventually finished 10 runs short.
Berkshire 189-6 (Reed 2-42, Hartridge 2-21), Devon 179 (Sargent 58, Wright 35). Berkshire won by 10 runs.
