Exeter lure Bess away from Sidmouth

SPINNER Dominic Bess has left Sidmouth for Exeter in search of regular 1st XI cricket this season.

Three generations of the Bess family have played for Sidmouth and the family are synonymous with the club.

Dom’s cousin is current Devon captain is Josh Bess, who just like his father and grandfather before has become is a permanent fixture in the Sidmouth side.

Dad Russell also had a long career at the club, when he wasn’t playing rugby for Exeter or Sidmouth with brother Graham.

Dominic Bess has his sights set on a career in the game and has been working hard through the winter at the Somerset Academy.

For most of the first half of the season the 16-year-old will be playing for Blundell’s School.

Having found it hard to get into the Sidmouth side last season – Bess (right) played more games for Somerset 2nd XI than Sidmouth 1st XI in the league – he has decided to try elsewhere.

Miles Lenygon, the Exeter captain, said Bess had connections with the club through Devon U17s, which swung the decision.

“Dom knew it would be a big ask for him to get back in the side halfway through the season when he becomes available,” said Lenygon.

“We are in desperate need of a second spinner and while everyone has to earn their place in the side the way Dom has been playing I am confident he will do a good job for us.

“It helps that Dom’s Devon team-mates Ben Green and Billy Searle are already here so he isn’t arriving cold.”

While Lenygon is happy to get his man, Sidmouth opposite number Will Murray admitted he was sad to lose Bess.

“He assured me he will be back within a couple of years. I have wished him all the best with his aims.”

While Bess is on the way out of the Fortfield, Aussie paceman Daniel Babula is about to jet in.

Babula, a fast bowler, claimed 43 wickets at around 21 runs each for Manly-Warringha in Sydney during the season just ended.

He played in Victoria with St Kilda between 2008-2013, picking up 108 wickets.

It seems there is going to be transfer activity right up to the start of the season at Exeter as Lenygon is looking for another player with a Premier pedigree as well.

Lenygon his confirmed that Exeter University and Somerset 2nd XI pacer Joe Barrs, who was attached to Bovey Tracey previously has signed on.

One player definitely not on his way to the County Ground is Devon batsman Rhys Davies, who was with Tavistock last season. MCCU commitments will prevent him playing.
