Lake hammers Sandford with bat and ball

SANDFORD were shown little or no mercy by Bovey Tracey as they tumbled to an eight-wicket defeat.
It wasn’t just the margin of defeat that will have depressed Sandford’s players, but the ease with which it was achieved.
Sandford were bowled out for 146 with Bovey’s Zimbabwean 19 star Malcolm Lake taking five for 34.
Bovey knocked off the runs inside 18 overs thanks to some brutal hitting from Lake, whose 85 came off just 43 balls and included 14 fours and three sixes. Ouch!
Cornwood remain below Sandford in the table and Heathcoat are only eight points ahead so the relegations waters aren’t closing over them just yet.
The next two Saturdays see Sandford visit Heathcoat them entertain Cornwood and nothing less than two wins will do in the fight to stay up.
Only Laurence May of the Sandford batters emerged with much credit from the tatters of the innings. He hit 11 fours and two sixes on the way to 75 off 77 balls.
May and youngster Gary Abdoll (23) put on 53 for the eighth wicket. Adrian Smal was the only other batter to reach double figures.
Bovey’s South African pacer Nathan Roberts (4-27) got into the early order, leaving Lake to finish up.
Lake and Blundell’s student Sam Wyatt-Haines flogged 110 for the first wicket in the first ten overs. Russ Discombe had Wyatt-Haines caught behind for 27.
By the time Lake was second out on 125 – caught at mid-wicket having a go at Discombe (2-19) – he had destroyed the bowling.
Laundre Van Wyk was belted for 22 in his third over – two sixes, two fours and a couple of twos – and skipper James Palmer went for fours and a six in one of his.
Bovey skipper Fairbairn said without May’s contribution it would have been over even earlier.
“We bowled very well again and would have got Sandford out for under 100 if it wasn't for a fantastic innings by Lawrence May,” said Fairbairn.
“He batted superbly for a young player and we couldn't get him out.
“The star of the day was Malcolm Lake, who has been threatening a big performance like that all year.
“Malcolm bowled very well for his five wickets and then batted unbelievably for his 85.
“He hits the ball so hard and with a good deck, the new ball and fielding restrictions it was just right for him.
“Sam Wyatt-Haines also looked good up top and scored 27 at a strike rate of 127 but was first out at 110.
“It has been a great division to play in this year and I love seeing so many young Devon players doing well.
“Sam Wyatt-Haines, Lawrence May, Ben Green, Max Curtis, Matt Golding, Ben Stein, Dom Bess and don't forget Jamie Overton.
“To have Jamie and Adam Dibble both playing for their clubs when available is great for the league and shows what a good place it is to play.”
