BOVEY Tracey could be without skipper Andy Fairbairn for the season due to a knee injury.
Fairbairn won’t be playing in the opening game against newly promoted Paignton this Saturday as he is waiting for an MRI scan to reveal the worst,.
Former captain Pete Bradley is back in charge for the time being – and the change may become permanent.
“I suspect I won’t be able to play, although the scan will tell me more,” said Fairbairn.
“At a push I could stand at slip for 50 overs and bat on one leg, but that’s not a lot of use to the team so Peter is going to captain for now.”
Bovey were among the nearly men last season with a fourth place finish. They have not finished lower than fourth or higher than third since 2009, but a real title push keeps eluding them.
Can Bovey break the mould this year? Fairbairn isn’t sure.
“We set out every season to win the league – but so do most of the sides in our division.
“We feel we have strengthened, but Exmouth and North Devon will say the same and you can never discount Sidmouth, even though they have lost a few.
“In a league where anybody can beat anybody, we have as good a chance as anyone.”
It is hard to know if Bovey are stronger than last season, weaker or about the same.
Gone for good are Somerset 2nd XI and Devon all-rounder Sam Wyatt-Haines (Clevedon) and South African Nathan Roberts, who has not come back to the club.
Malcolm Lake, the former Zimbabwe U19 captain who made 574 runs last season, won’t be around until late June.
The new overseas player is Jordan Willoughby, a batter from Tazmania, who played in the Northern Premier League for Morecambe last summer.
Also new are former Shaldon pair Seamus McKenna and James Fulner, who have prolific records in the lower divisions.
Toby Codd – he bats and bowls – has switched from Abbotskwerswell.
And Charlie Sheen, who bats middle order, has been registered after moving to the area from Surrey.
Sheen’s last club was Caterham, for whom he has scored more than 5,000 league runs and taken in excess of 250 wickets.
