Carthew justifies promotion

BRADNINCH are up to sixth in the A Division after sending Brixham home 54-run losers.

Skipper Tim Piper got his head down to make c56 not out off 106 balls with just two boundaries along the way as Bradninch made 195 for six.

Ross Acton got 22 at the top of the order, then Piper held the middle together at one end while Jacob Gregory (2-14) and Andy Pugh were taking wickets at the other.

Bradninch looked in a bit of trouble at 114 for six with 12 overs to go, then Piper found a running mate.

Connor Carthew justified his promotion from the 2nd XI with 36 off 38 balls, mostly in ones and twos, as he and Piper added 81 unbroken.

Brixham needed early impetus to chase down the total, but were rocked by an opening burst from Paul Nott and Ross Acton.

Acton (3-25) and Nott (2-18) had Brixham reeling at 31 for five – and it didn’t get any better when Will Squire and Gian Botha came on.

Brixham deteriorated to 41 for six and 61 for eight before hitting 116 for nine when Paul Heath was bowled by Dan Hardy for 26.

Bradninch had more than eight overs at last pair Simon Caunter (30no) and Phil Hyde (13no) but couldn’t shift them.

Brixham closed on 141 for nine, which denied Bradninch a bowling bonus point for all ten wickets.

Bradninch captain Tim Piper said he was frustrated to drop a point, but with promotion-chasing Paignton coming up he was content with a ‘good win over a decent side’.

“In hindsight perhaps it would have been better to bowl first, but at the toss the outfield was so wet, we felt there was no other choice than to bat first as two of our best bowlers, Ross and Squire rely on a dry ball to get the most out of it,” said Piper.

“We managed to hang in there with the bat knowing 160 was probably par and Connor Carthew came in at the end and gave us great momentum going into the second half of the match.

“Early wickets were wanted and taken - and it was never a match from then on.

“It was disappointing to only get nine wickets, but we only have ourselves to blame.

“Ultimately, we weren't good enough to get them all out, with the ball or in the field.”

“It was a good win though against a team with some decent players.

“Looking forward to carrying it through to this Saturday when we face Paignton in probably one of the biggest games of the year for us.”

Brixham captain Andy Pugh said two big decisions by the umpires early on changed the game.

“Our two best players were given out in the first ten overs – and there was no coming back from that,” said Pugh.

“Scrumpy (Mark Orchard) bowled brilliantly and Tim Robinson and Simon Caunter batted well

“I think we are a good, middle-table side right now, nothing more.”
