BRAUNTON are under no illusions that the team making the short trip to Heathcoat tomorrow will be engaged in a fight for survival this season.
The close-season hasn’t been kind to Braunton with numerous players retiring or moving on.
Jaz Kalsi wants to test himself at Premier level again with North Devon, while spinner Harry Booker has joined Exeter and all-rounderAndy Paddison has retired.
Disappointingly for Braunton youngster Sam Lathwel is taking a total break from cricket, which means dad Mark won’t be playing either.
Keeper Ian Roberts is the new skipper – he replaces Baglow – but more woe for Braunton is that he and Mark Mitchell will miss the opening round of matches due to injury.
There are some plusses – Mike Paine has rejoined after doing the rounds of Barnstaple, Torquay and Exmouth – but no one expects anything other than a struggle.
“It will be a year for youngsters like Alfie Huxtable and Dan Crocombe to come into the side and establish themselves as 1st XI players,” said Roberts.
“Getting a 1st XI out won’t be a problem, but finding 22 players every Saturday for two league games will be a struggle at the start of the season as we don’t have the depth.
“If we can hang on in the A Division this season, it will have been a successful one,”
