Braunton appeal prompts surge of support

BRAUNTON are looking ahead to the new season with renewed confidence after a public warning the future of the club was in doubt produced a surge of support.

Acting chairman Gary Gomez warned recently the club was in danger of folding unless more players came forward.

Braunton’s two Devon League sides were relegated last season – and at times struggled to get 11 players on the field.

The Kelseymen find themselves in the B Division next season, a level they have not played at since 1984, when they were promoted out of it as champions ahead of runners-up Sandford.

Gomez’s warning prompted a turn out of more than 40 players and members at a crisis annual meeting – and pledges of support for the season ahead.

Gomez said the club isn’t out of the wood yet, but seems to be heading in the right direction.

“We saw some old faces and some players who didn’t turn out that often last season and all have committed themselves to be available more often in 2014,” said Gomez.

“A few new faces got in touch having read about our situation and want to join us this season.

“We will continue with two Saturday XIs and a Sunday side in the North Devon League, which I will continue to captain.

“Ian Roberts will continue as 1st XI skipper. We have yet to decide who will captain the 2nd XI.”

Braunton are hoping to add some overseas firepower to the 1st XI this summer in the shape of a talented, young cricketer from New Zealand.

Former Braunton batsman Jas Kalsi is currently playing in New Zealand and has been approached by a player interested in a season in Devon.

“We have no money to bring overseas players in so we couldn’t afford to go looking for one,” said Gomez.

“Nothing is agreed yet but the young man concerned will only be coming if he pays his own fares.

“For our part we need to find someone willing to put him up for the summer on behalf of the club.”

With enthusiasm revived for the season ahead, nets are already underway at Park School in Barnstaple every Sunday.

Practice times are 3-5pm and anyone interesting in going along should contact Gomez on 07733 141317.
