Derby date for Paignton and Brixham at QP

PAIGNTON head into the big Bay derby against Brixham at Queens Park boosted by an 81-run win over Hatherleigh.

Opener Marc Smith cracked a top score of 60, which came  off 113 balls and included four sixes and five fours, as Paignton totaled 192 for nine.

Although new boy Zubayr Hamza missed out – the South African was out for nine – Mike Cousens (23) and Chris Kelmere (41) both batted well with Smith.

Cousens and Smith added 50 for the second wicket, then Kelmere put on another 61 before Smith fell at 136 for four to Mark Lake.

Hatherleigh captain Lake might have got himself on earlier as he finished with five for 19 off 10 overs – and had Smith, Kelmere and Richard Ashworth among his scalps.

Hatherleigh limped to 111 for eight in reply with Paignton unable to finish them off.

Kelmere had four for 13 off 10 with his brisk off-spin, but none of the other bowlers claimed more than one wicket.

Skipper Connor Bryan tried eight bowlers in an effort to winkle out the tail enders, without success.

Chris Jelley, the former Exmouth, Sandford and Clyst Hydon keeper-batter, top scored for Hatherleigh with 58 not out off 108 balls.

Said Bryan: “Overall it was a great result.

“The boys played some hard cricket. We were all a little disappointed we didn't gain maximum points but are really looking forward to this week.”

Brixham make two changes to the side that defeated Chudleigh. Joe Hyde and Lee Upham bowled themselves into promotion from the 2nd XI with Mime Barron and Richard Ward going the other way.
