BROCKMAN CUP - 2012
DOUBLE winners Stoke Gabriel – they won the Narracott Cup as well last season – have been drawn at home in the first round of the Brockman Cup.
Fifteen teams have entered South Devon’s oldest midweek cricket competition, which was first contested way back in 1932.
There are no new clubs this season, although Shaldon have entered their 2nd XI as the 1st XI now qualifies for the more senior Narracott Cup.
Shaldon’s ‘first’ game in the Brockman takes them to Lustleigh, who dominated the competition in the late 1990s.
South Devon Etceteras or Torquay await the winners of the Lustleigh-Shaldon tie.
There are some new rules in the Brockman this season aimed at encouraging positive cricket.
The rule on wides has been tightened to include bowling outside the off-stump.
And fielding restrictions have been brought in for the semi-finals and finals.
Four fielders – plus the bowler and wicketkeeper – must be inside a 30-yard circle at the point of delivery.
Both semis and the final are played at Torquay CC, which is large enough to accommodate a fielding circle.
Plans to have a ring all the way through the rounds were vetoed as some grounds simply aren’t big enough to make one worthwhile.
The full draw (dates in brackets) is: First round – Chelston v Kingskerswell (May 9); Brixham v Abbotskerswell (May 15), Stokeinteignnead v Dartington & Totnes (May 15), Ipplepen v Paignton (May 15); South Devon v Torquay (May 22), Stoke Gabriel v Barton (May 22), Lustleigh v Shaldon (May 22).
