Brockman Cup final - 2002

OPENING batsman George Burningham was named man of the match as South Devon ended Lustleigh's six-year reign as Brockman Cup holders at the Recreation Ground on Friday night.

Burningham hit 71 as South Devon chased 142 to win in the 20-overs-a-side competition and got them with two balls to spare.

In one of the tensest finals for years, South Devon reached the last over needing nine to win with third-wicket pair Ben Chadwick and Brian Allen out in the middle.

That became three of the last two balls, at which point Lustleigh skipper Chris Simms, who earlier hammered 86 not out in his side's 141 for five, bowled a no-ball which Chadwick hit for two.

For Burningham it has been a remarkable season as he has hit 282 runs in five matches at an average of 141.5!

His top score was in the second round when he made 90 not out as South Devon chased 121 to win against Torquay.

His 71 against Lustleigh included four fours and four sixes - two of them in the same over from Mike Sessions.

Lustleigh 141-5 (C Simms 86no, P Bartlett 16; C Shute 2-30), South Devon 142-2 (G Burningham 71, A Hewings 27, B Chadwick 26no).
