B Division 2nd XI - May 7

B DIVISION – MAY 7

YELVERTON paid a heavy price for dropping Alphington opener Richard Coe as he batted through to make 94 not out in a 159-run win for his side.

Tony Carter struck twice early on for Yelverton, but Coe and Jay Norwood (45) put on 76 to take the score to 113 for three.

Norwood (45) was dismissed by 14 year old Dan Cooper's first delivery.

Alphington skipper Tom Weeks joined Cousins and after some early scares the pair put on 108 for the fourth wicket despite some tight bowling from Yelverton skipper Pearson (2-41).

After Weeks was dismissed for 59, some late hitting got Alphington up to an imposing 253 for five.

Chris Cottrell (10) and Andy Taylor (14) got the Bohemians off to a steady start, but after the loss of Cottrell with the score on 20, wickets fell at regular intervals to Stephen Hathaway (3-31) and Matt Barnes (5-28) as the batsman found it difficult to build meaningful partnerships.

Only Fraser Coleman (24) and James Worrell (19no) made scores of note as the Bohemians were dismissed for 94.

Sean Green was Abbotskerswell’s man of the match in an 80-run win over visiting Abbotskerswell.

Green hammered a top score of 63 not out in Abbots’ 46-over total of 181 for seven. The leading wicket takers were Joe Hyde (3-52) and Rhys Dallow (3-51).

Green then bagged four wickets for 27 runs as Brixham were all out for 92 with eight overs to go. Hyde (24no) was still there at the end.

Stoke Gabriel turned Kingsbridge over by seven wickets in a one-sided affair.

Sam Hill (3-13) killed Kingsbridge over after Jamie Day (2-40) and Seb Ansley (2-24) had softened them up,

John Hardy (26) and Shaun Taylor (22) had the only scores of note for Kingsbridge.

Steve Tolley (38) and Alex Bertram (20) put on 50 for the second wicket to break the back of the chase. Jack Tolley (15no) was in at the early end.

South Devon took a weakened side to Bideford where they lost by 165 runs.

Fergus Bradbeeer, John Weeks, Alex Crisp and Dan Barratt all scored half centuries as Bideford piled up 295 for four.

There were stands of 108 for the first wicket – Bradbeer and Weeks – and another of 135 between Crisp and Barratt as the runs kept coming.

Spinner Jamie Hart bowled manfully for South Devon to take four for 94.

South Devon were all out for 130 in reply with Crisp taking three wickets and two each for Barratt and Atkinson.

Skipper Neil Matthews made 30 and Dan Ball 31 and with Ian Shepherd making 20 on top it seemed a draw was on the cards.

The turning point was Matthews’ dismissal at 108 for six. South Devon fell away badly as the tail was exposed to lose with five overs remaining.

With players coming back this week, Matthews is confident of having a stronger side to face Shobrooke Park.

Shobrooke were unlucky to run into Heathcoat’s overseas signing Chris Small when they entertained their mid-Devon rivals.

Small missed the 1st XI deadline day for new signings so Heathcoat asked him to assist the 2nd XI instead.

Small made 60 and shared in a stand of 130 for the first wicket with Steve Harding in Heathcoat’s total of 199 all out. Mark Goodman (4-47) was Shobrooke’s best bowler.

Shobrooke were all out for 81 in reply – which was a lot more than they looked like getting at 44 for nine!

David Manning (20) and Keiron Vinnicombe (14) postponed the inevitable by putting on 37.

Heathcoat’s Lee Dixon took four for 21 and there were two wickets each for Small and Darren Drew in a 118-run win.
