B DIVISION
CHUDLEIGH bounced back from their opening-day mauling by Thorverton with a hefty five-wicket win at Chagford.
Billy Searle – the 15 year old son of former Bovey and Exeter big hitter Alan Searle – cracked a top score of 60 as Chagford recovered to make 170 all out.
Chagford were 125 for nine after a going over from Ben Holmes (4-48) and Tertius Gouws (4-50) which only Del Lammonby (27) and Stuart Lord (16) had withstood for long.
Searle and Dan Green (17no) put on 45 for the last wicket to give the bowlers something to defend.
Ed Hunt (61) and Gouws (44) had to rescue Chudleigh from 40 for three with a stand of 73 that broke the back of the chase.
Rob Clarke (29no) saw Chudleigh to victory despite Searle taking three for 30.
THE boot was on the other foot for Thorverton, who were thrashed by 128 runs when they entertained Plymstock.
Dom Wood clattered 119 for Plymstock and shared in an opening stand of 91 with Matt Smith (29).
Dave Orchard (34) and Wood knocked up another 102 and with Josh Hocken (31) chipping in Plymstock declared with an over to go at 283 for seven.
The early declaration meant an extra over for the frontline bowlers should Plymstock skipper Orchard need them, not that he did,
The Thors were bundled out for 155 with Blake Charlton (48)
making the only score of note. It was always going to be a struggle from 40 for
four and so it proved.
Seb Jordan had four for 48 and also put Thors’ Neil Branton in hospital with a
cut cheek after top edging the ball into his face. Morgan Parkinson and George
Barnicott claimed two wickets each.
AXMINSTER finished a long way short on the chase against visiting Dartington & Totnes.
Ryan Stevenson smashed an unbeaten century as D&T put 259 for nine on the board.
Stevenson, who hit nine fours and three sixes, opened up with big-hitter Bertus Loots, who rammed 79 runs into a 54-ball stay with 11 fours and four sixes.
Along the way there was a stand between Ryan and dad Harold (18) that added 51 for the seventh wicket.
Gary Larcombe (3-46) and brother Danny (2-29) had what bowling honours there were to be had for Axminster.
The Carpetmen were 183 for eight when they ran out of overs with extras (55) their top contributor.
Ryan Walker and Nick Taylor shut up shop seven overs out to secure the draw. A stand of 78 between Gary Larcombe (30) and Dan Murnane (21) was as good as it got for Axminster.
Loots wrapped up a tidy performance with four wickets for 59 runs. Ryan Stevenson took two for 43.
SOUTH Devon were brought down to earth with a bump at Tavistock, who beat them by four wickets in a low-scoring affair.
Having beaten Chagford in their opening game, another game of modest totals, hopes were high in the South Devon camp.
Only Peter Vortster (48) and Adrian Hewings (22) made headway against man of the match Shaun Daymond (4-31) or Andy Gauler (3-39).
Tavistock didn’t find runs that much easier to come by and wobbled from 101 for four to 108 for six after losing Dave Manning for 29.
Daymond made a patient 27 not out off 94 balls to win the match for Tavvy.
Spinner Matt Coult had three Tavvy wickets and Vorster two more.
CLYST St George made Barnstaple & Pilton fight every inch of the way for a two-wicket win at Taw Meadow.
Peter Weatherhead top scored on 50 not out in a Clyst total of 218 for four.
Weaterhead and Steve May (29no) topped up after a stand of 60 between Chris Ferro (42) and Matt Cook (29) helped Clyst reach 100 for two.
Clyst saw off the threat from Steve Moore (0-43 off 13), but lost wickets here and there to the rest of the attack with Matt Clarke (2-49) the most successful.
B&P were in all sorts of trouble at four for three in reply – Steve Burke (4-60) doing the damage - and grateful to former Exmouth and Torquay batter Ed Yeo for digging them out of trouble.
Yeo (74) and Danny Donovan (55) put on a priceless 128 for the fifth wicket with Yeo and Jack Popham (44) taking the score up to 168.
Popham was out with seven needed for victory, which B&P got with nine balls to spare.
