HATHERLEIGH remain too close for comfort to the bottom of the A Division table following a seven-wicket defeat by Budleigh Salterton.
That’s three defeats on the trot now for Hatherleigh, who are two places and eight points clear of the bottom two with leaders Plympton to play this Saturday.
Jack Cherrington made 63 and Chris Jelley 47 in Hatherleigh’s total of 196 all out.
Jelley and Carl Schwarz (32) rescued Hatherleigh a first time after they had been four for two with a stand of 47 for the third wicket.
Schwarz and Simon Gillespie went for nine runs added, then Cherrington and Jelley knocked up 62 for the next wicket.
After Jelley went – one of three scalps for Joel Murphy (3-24) – Cherrington batted through to the end.
Rob Fishleigh and Sean Letheran hung around at the end to help Cherrington add 47 for the last two wickets.
Murphy, Ben Phillips (3-26) and Luke Peterson (3-35) did most of the wicket taking for Budleigh.
Knocking off the runs was never an issue for Budleigh after openers Harry Parkin (40) and James Burke (77) made a 121-run hole in the deficit.
Both went in quick succession, but Peterson (19) and Jack Dart (42no) made certain there were no Budleigh slip ups on the last lap.
Hatherleigh skipper Mark Lake said other than a couple of big calls by the umpires which went against his side, he had no complaints.
“We were short of runs on a very good wicket,’ said Lake.
“Budleigh they were clinical in everything they did and with class players like Burke and Phillips in the team they are going to punish you.
“A couple of umpiring decisions should have gone our way early, but apart from that we were beaten fair and square by a good team.”
