Budleigh surrender top spot

THINGS can only get better for Budleigh Salterton this Saturday in the top-of-the-table clash with Paignton after a six-wicket defeat by brixham cost them the outright leadership.

Paignton are the new leaders now, but only because they didn’t lose so quite so badly against Bradninch and earned an extra bonus point or two.

“It could have been a lot worse, but for once and very rarely it seems we had some luck with other results going in our favour,” said Bradninch captain Joel Murphy.

“I am not one to hide behind excuses; all I would say about Brixham  was our batsmen didn’t turn up, as the modern paralance has it.

“Elliot Rice batted well for his 54, Rob Craze (22) got a few, but the rest gave very little.

“We bowled and fielded well and made Brixham work for it, but we were never going to defend 122.

“Paignton this Saturday is our chance to get back on track and with James Burke, Harry Parkin and Ben Phillips back I will be looking for a much better performance.

Take away Rice and Craze and there wasn’t  a score above eight in the Budleigh batting.

The last seven wickets fell for just 17 runs, starting with Matt Plowman and and finishing with Murphy.

Spin proved Budleigh’s undoing with Gary Spencer taking three for 32 and Jake Gregory five for four.

Brixham got away to a 50-run start through Gregory (15) and Tim Robinson (47) before Luke Peterson made a breakthrough.

By the time Robinson was second outt to Craze, Brixham only needed 35 to win.

Andy Pugh made 34 not out to see Brixham home with more than 20 overs to go.
