Budleigh back on top of A Division

BUDLEIGH are back on top of the A Division after the briefest of interludes following a 69-run win at Barton.

Barton were briefly top of the table having beaten Brixham to get there seven days earlier when Budleigh’s game against Hatherleigh was called off.

Budleigh set Barton a total of 170 to win at Cricketfield Road – recovering from 42 or five - then bowled the Torquay side out for exactly 100.

Victory puts Budleigh joint top with Paignton, who beat Lewdown at Queens Park.

Barton slip down to third, but are only four points behind and will look to make inroads when they host Plympton this Saturday.

Barton had Budleigh rocking at 42 for five with Andy McVeigh (2-36) and Tom Drake (4-31) among the wickets.

A stand of 70 between Luke Paterson (62) and Ben Phillips Jnr – no relation to the former Somerset bowler also playing for Budleigh this season –changed the complexion of the game.

“Without Luke and Ben, who batted fantastically for a 15 year old, we would have got nowhere near 169,” said Budleigh skipper Joel Murphy (pictured).

“Barton had us on the ropes, but let us off if I am honest. The wides (35) helped.

“The conditions were not great for batting and a 170 to win was worth 250-260 anywhere else.

“I thought we had the worst of it, but when they went out after tea the ball was jumping all over the place.

“Once we got Calland and Needham out, Barton didn’t seem to have a lot of answers to our bowling.”

Paterson had both openers out – Shaun Needham and Chris Penna – with just 13 on the board – and at 43 Murphy dismissed Calland then Drake in successive balls.

Denovan Ekstraal (24) and Steve Lewis (21) resisted – they put on 29 – but James Burke (2-36) got them in the space of nine balls to leave Barton 73 for six.

Rob Craze (2-14) and Murphy (2-18) flushed out the tail-enders.

For Barton captain Adam Parker, things can only get better this Saturday against Plympton.

“After a superb start we let them back into the game with some poor bowling and a couple of dropped catches,” said Parker.

“Batting was difficult against disciplined bowling and a tough pitch to bat on.

“We will start again this Saturday and get the basics right again.”

Budleigh are away again, this time to Brixham.
