Budleigh Salterton & Heathcoat

IT looks like being a transitional season for Budleigh Salterton, who hope to entertain Heathcoat on Saturday if their pitch has dried out.

As Ottermouth was under water earlier this week, Budleigh may have to wait a week to get under way.

Joel Murphy (pictured) is back as captain – 11 years after he last did the job and via a stint at Bradninch as well – with a straightforward approach to the game.

Budleigh may not win the Premier Division this season, but they will be playing every game to win and won’t take too many prisoners.

Realistically, Budleigh are looking at mid-table as there is a changing of the guard.

Murphy got to know the youngsters last season when he returned to the club and wants to see them become fully fledged 1st XI warriors.

“Lloyd Murrin, Lloyd White, Elliot Rice, Matt Plowman, Jack Dart and Charlie Morris all showed last season they have great potential,” said Murphy.

“What I want to see this season is our fine crop of youngsters become integrated into the team and become established Premier Division players themselves.

“We have some sound old head around – Bob Dawson and Sandy Allen for example – and now they are not playing for Devon they are free to concentrate on their league cricket.”

Budleigh have lost seamer Scott Barlow, who has given up the commute from Bournemouth to play, and are unlikely to see much of spinner James Hudson this season.

The new overseas player is Sri Lankan Gamindu Amarasinghe, a batsman with recent First Class experience with Saracens Sports Club, for whom he averages more than 50.

HEATHCOAT – they visit Budleigh Salterton on Saturday – were a whisker away from relegation last season and don’t. expect things to be much easier in 2012.

Chris Small has replaced the departed Liam Lewis as captain and recognises the size of the task ahead.

One point was all that kept Heathcoat up last season, which was a battle from start to finish.

Having been hardened by the experience, Small feels Heathcoat are prepared for the trial ahead.

“With Liam and Pete Randerson both going to Sidmouth during the winter, we have lost a couple of big players and not been able to replace them,” said Small.

“It will be down to others to step up this season. I will be looking to make more runs, I am looking at the Smiths (Joe and Sam) to contribute more and hope this will be Andrew Birt-Mitchell’s breakthrough season.

“Our experiences last year will stand us in good stead this season.”
