Bullock trouble at Bradninch

BRADNINCH cricket club suffered serious damage from a rampaging cow after one got on to the club’s Kensham Park ground and caused a real problem for groundsman Gary Newall.

The bullock got onto the pitch right in the corner of the ground where then tennis courts meet the lane that runs adjacent to the pitch. It was apparently frightened whilst in a herd being moved by the farmer and bolted.

The damage it did was extensive – some of the holes left by hoof marks were eight inches long and four inches deep!

The square was hit with at least two strips put out of action, probably for the remainder of the season.

However, in typical ‘show-must-go-on ‘ fashion, groundsman Newall sent an e-mail round and that prompted skipper Gary Chappell together with colts William Birley and Max Cooper to turn up and help with the repair job.

It involved three hours of hole filling with a mix of loam and grass seed, after which the ground was cut and rolled in a bid to get it ready for Saturday’s Premier Division visit of Heathcoat.

“It certainly created us a problem or three but we got stuck in and I’d like to thank Gary and the two youngsters for their immediate response and their hard work, it was good old fashioned team work at its best,” said Newall.
