C Division - Hydon give Chagford a scare

CLYST Hydon skipper Ian Sutton insisted he was disappointed with a losing draw against promotion-chasing Chagford.
Former Exeter all-rounder del Lammonby cracked 84 not out and Dale Chadwick made 44 as Chagford recovered from 57 for five to reach 220 for nine.
Kev Sercombe (3-49) and Peter Milner (4-58) were the leading Clyst bowlers.
Matt Fitt got out for nothing at the start of Clyst’s reply, but Sutton (56) and George Pawley (72) took the score up to 147 before the next wicket fell.
Lammonby (4-54) and Billy Searle (3-39) got the brake on as Clyst slowed to 193 for seven.
Said Sutton: “If any one had offered me 10 points at the start of the day I probably would have taken it.
“Having got to 147 for one we should have won, but it was hard for the new batsmen starting their innings in gloomy conditions.
“I thought we bowled and fielded well, and if a couple catches had been held and decisions went or way we could have got them our or for 130.
“A definite positive was the fact it was the first time I've been in a team that didn't bowl any wides.”
Clyst St George, whose battle to dodge the drop brings Bideford to Bohea Field on Saturday, gave leaders Stoke Gabriel a scare in a top-against-bottom thriller.
Clyst, who are battling to avoid a second successive relegation, cobbled together 144 all out.
Matt Cook made 31 and Will Aldridge an unbeaten 21 as Clyst recovered from 61 for five to post something defendable.
The wickets were shared around with Angus Lee (2-18) and Nick Sandbrook (2-27) having the best.
Stoke seemed to have the game wrapped up at 102 for two with Anthony Scott (52 of 24 balls) going well.
It was a different story at 118 for seven after a duffing up from Mike Johnson (4-55) and Chris Cook (4-30).
Adam Castle and Lee hung around as Stoke limped from 123 for eight to 136 for nine before sealing victory with 14 balls to go.
Skipper Steve Bourke said he felt 145 was a defendable total and when dangerman Anthony Scott went cheaply a win was on the cards.
“Mike Johnson and Chris Cook bowled brilliantly and the crucial wicket of Scott got us going,” said Bourke.
“Some dropped catches might have changed the result, but I am still proud of the team for their fighting spirit.”
Ipplepen, who were top, dropped back to second on games won as they could only manage a losing draw at Kingsbridge.
James Fletcher belted 110 and James Westlake 53 as Kings motored to 249 for five. Richie Carr chipped in with 40.
Pens were in the hunt at 98 for two – Joe Abbott (65) to the fore – but faded to 108 for five under pressure from Neal Peach (2-47) and Bhanu daSilva (4-62).
Sam Wakeham added 37 as Pens got to 207 for seven before the overs ran out.
Kingsbridge go to Clyst this Saturday and Pens are back at home for the visit of Ottery.
Ashburton came up a long way short at Bideford where they didn’t score enough runs to force a losing draw.
Mike Young blazed away to make 105 and Alan Withycombe 79 in Bideford’s 227 for three. Tom Durman (2-51) was the most successful of the Ashburton bowlers.
Durman then top scored with 68 as Ashburton reached a disappointing 143 for eight in reply.
There were two wickets each for Chris Luxton (2-39), Alex Crisp (2-18) and Martin Stewart (2-20) as Bideford turned the screw.
Ashes will be hoping for more runs and wickets when they entertain Chagford this Saturday.
Ottery head to promotion-chasing Ipplepen still smarting from a 99-run defeat by Ivybridge.
The Bridge declared on 245 for two with Kevin Jacobs (75) and Andy Johnson (45) getting a 120-run start, then Kelvin Trent (46no) and Jeewan deSilva (55no) adding 139 more.
Sam Laud’s one for 53 was as good as it got with the ball for the Otters.
Sri Lankan de Silva then took six for 39 as Ottery were bowled out for 146 with an over to go.
Sam Tennant made 59 and Richard Townsend 22, but otherwise it was a bleak day for the batters.
Ottery drop down to fourth from bottom, 13 points ahead of the relegation danger area.
Skipper Jody Clements said there are a couple of tough tests ahead, but he is confident of staying clear of danger.
“Ipplepen (2^nd) and Stoke Gabriel (top) are coming up and they will be hard games for us,” said Clements.
“The secret is to play positive cricket, which we didn’t really do against Ivybridge.
“We allowed ourselves to get bogged down and ended up being outplayed in all areas.”
