C Division: Ashes on the up

C DIVISION

ASHBURTON moved closer to safety at the wrong end of the C Division when they defeated bottom side Cockington by 142 runs.

Ashes totted up 190 all out. Tom Durman was once again the star of the show with a top score of 71 until caught and bowled by James Howrihane (2-36).

Durman put on 44 for the third wicket with Ashley Harvey (29) and 42 for the fifth wicket with Martin Causey (22).

There were 10 fours and a six in Durman’s knock.

The tail wagged a little too. Kris Connabeer (20no) and Gordon Colwill (14) at 10 almost got the fifth bonus point.

Scott Colgate (5-52) was the most successful Cockington bowler. Will Wyatt picked up 3-60.

Cockington found it difficult getting to grips with the Ashes’ seam attack. Subsiding at one point to 27-7,.

They recovered slightly at 42-8, then were completely shot away at 48 all out with 28 overs to go.

None of Cockington’s batsmen got into double figures, extras at a modest 16 was top of the shop.

Durman (5-24) and Marcus West (2-15) were the early destroyers, followed by Gordon Colwill (2-4) and Ashley Harvey (1-2) who mopped up the rest.

Cockington (31pts) appear to be well adrift at the bottom with Ashes (66) now in striking distance of Seaton (69) to get out of the relegation zone.

STOKE Gabriel fell apart against leaders Lewdown, who ran-up a total of 241 for one then shot Stoke out for a measly 91.

Dropping Lewdown opener Harry Geering early on proved critical as he went on to score 114. Kris Harris made 31 – he and Geering opened up with 48 - then Dan Ball (32) and Rob Mutch (41no) all chipped in.

Stoke’s bowling figures were nothing special, although Mark Newman deserves a mention for his two for 38.

Stoke were in trouble from the word go against Mutch (5-23) and Phil Yeo (4-16), dipped to 32 for six at a rate of knots.

Skipper Dave Bolland (24no) and Doug Ansley (17) put on 40, but once Ansley went it was downhill to 91 all out.

Lewdown haven’t lost this season and the wise money is on them going up as champions.

Stoke are hovering in the phalanx of clubs chasing second place, but will need to play better than this to frighten rivals Clyst Hydon or Ivybridge as the promotion race hots up.

KINGSBRIDGE certainly couldn’t hold Clyst Hydon as they lost there by four wickets.

Kingsbridge never really got going when they batted as they were 85 for four, 116 for seven and 150 all out.

Chris Clark (24) and James Fletcher (33) fared best among the batters against Clinton Lewis (3-33) and Dhanuda Haturusingha (4-37).

Ian Sutton (48) and Paul Jelley (15) made early runs as Clyst reached 52 for two in reply.

Although Bhanuka deSilva (2-27) and James Shepherd (2-36) managed to keep Kingsbridge spirits up with then odd breakthrough, Graham Trude (26no) saw the chase through with 10 overs to spare.

Second-placed Clyst trail leaders Lewdown by 23 points and are 13 up on third-placed Seatton, who slipped up badly against Ivybridge.

Seaton were limited to 170 for six in their 46 overs – John Waterhouse 46no) and Matt Hancock (40no) making most of them. Jeewan deSilva took four for 30.

Gareth Andrews (68) and Andy Johnson (74no) took Ivybridge over the line virtually untroubled.

HATHERLEIGH moved three places up the table to fifth on the strength of a four-wicket win over Bideford in the North Devon derby at Westward Ho!

Bideford were bowled out for 115 by super veteran Nick Rogers (3-32) and Mark Lake (5-31). Only James Ford (31) and Mike Young (27) did much with the bat.

Hatherleigh were pointed in the right direction by Mark Jones (46) and Hugh Romans (35). Although they lost three wickets in the 90s, Rhys Davies and Richard Tidball saw Hatherleigh home.
