FORMER Devon wicketkeeper Andy Hele has found a new role at struggling Cockington… as an opening bowler.
Hele has done many jobs on the cricketfield during his long career with Barton, Torquay, Exmouth, South Devon and Barton again, but bowling hasn’t been one of them before.
Needs must when you are in trouble though and skipper Hele manfully stepped into the breech against Hatherleigh on Saturday, not that it did Cockington much good.
Despite a first league wicket for Hele and two for the busy Will Wyatt, Hatherleigh made 296 for four declared in 39 overs.
Cockington were all out for 88 in reply, most coming in extras (37) of the 22 scored by Hele.
Cockington are resigned to relegation this season and are 56 points adrift already.
Hele says they will keep on playing though and whatever the result enjoy their cricket.
“I have had to open the bowling for the last two match as there was no one else – and I got my first league wicket against Hatherleigh,” said Hele.
“I can’t see it being a permanent career move though as on Sunday I could barely get out of bed!”
Rob Chapman made an unbeaten century for Hatherleigh and featured in stands of 140 with Hugh Romans (71) and 117 with Tom Rogers.
When Hele got out Cockington were 64 for three, which quickly became 77 for eight and 88 all out.
Simon Gillespie did the damage with six for seven.
Ashburton were brought down to earth after their win over Cockington when they found themselves losing to third-from-bottom Seaton.
Personnel missing, and a last-minute injury withdrawal, did not help matters.
Ross Field returned to first team cricket after 10 tears and young Will Coon made his debut.
Ashes could only muster 132 all out. Dean Topping (37) top scored with support from Tom Durman (18) and Gordon Colwill (12). Extras at 37 was also a large contributor. Joe Berry (4-44) removed most of the top order with further help from Ben Libby (2-19) and Ben Morgan 2-32.
Ashes’ batsmen struggled with the swinging ball. The only partnership of note was between Topping and Colwill for 40.
Seaton had a bad start, losing Mark Bray in the first over to Durman (2-37) for a duck. The next pair Alex Hunt (15) and Steve Pritchard (68no) put on 51 match-winning runs together for the second wicket.
Marcus West (2-21) and Dean Topping (2-14) picked a couple of wickets each.
Seaton crossed the line with 22 overs to spare with four wickets in hand.
Bhanu deSilva was Kingsbridge’s man of the match in their 68-run win over visiting Bideford.
Kingsbridge totalled 176 all out and were glad of a stand of 48 for the eighth wicket between deSilva (31) and Josh Dory (25) for rescuing them from 117 for seven.
Ashley Treeby (37) and Jack Westlake (29) made scores before Kings ran into trouble against Chris Luxton (4-51) and James Ford (3-22).
Bideford were in no-man’s land at 81 for five with Matt Allin (31) already out. James Rosewarne (4-12) and deSilva (4-23) then shot the visitors out for 108.
Stoke Gabriel came out on top by two wickets in a low-scoring game against Ivybridge.
Kelvin Trent (24) and Gareth Andrews (21) made the only scores of note in the Bridgers’ total of 135 all out. There were two wickets each for Mark Phillips, Andy Lockyer and Sam Hill.
Having been 101 for four, it was a disappointing total, but not far of par for the day.
Stoke looked good at 110 for four – Matt Taylor (24) top scoring – then ran into trouble against Jeewan deSilva (4-20).
Billy Alcock and Matt Smyth dug in to take Stoke to victory and up to fifth in the table, just 14 points off second place.
Clyst Hydon were reminded of the pecking order at the top of the C Division when they lost by six wickers to leaders Lewdown.
Clyst were all out for 146 with Ian Sutton (39) and Graham Trude (20) the only batters to prosper. Having been 78 for none it was a disappointing total.
Skipper Charlie Hughes took five for 43 for Lewdown, who raced to victory with 12 overs to spare.
Dave Ball hit 42. Mark Jordan was out for 50 and Rob Mutch hit a six to win it.
Clyst stay second in the standings, but have drifted 41 points behind Lewdown.
