C DIVISION – WEEK FIVE
SEATON skipper Ben Morgan had no hiding places after his team’s 231-run humbling at Clyst Hydon.
Clint Lewis made a top score of 53 in Clyst’s total of 273 for nine, aided an abetted by George Pawley (47), 54 extras given away and 38 from Sri Lankan star Dhanuja Haturusingha.
Seaton crumbled to four for 12 in reply and were skittled out for a measly 42. Haturusingha took eight for 21 – his second eight-wicket haul this season – and skipper Kev Sercombe two for 12.
Alex Hunt;’s 12 was the best of a sorry set of Seaton scores.
Said Morgan: “I can’t put my finger on what went wrong, other than we have a young side and their Sri Lankan pace man was quicker than most of the lads have faced before,
“His eight-wicket haul testament to how difficult we found life against him!”
Seaton were not helped by the fact that they were forced to start the game with only nine players owing to wicket keeper Matt Hancock and opening bowler Ben Libby (3-81) getting lost en-route .
When the pair finally arrived Libby claimed the best of the visiting bowling figures with 3-81 whilst Hancock took over behind the stumps from stand-in glovesman Andy Carter.
Clyst Hydon sit second in the table behind leaders Lewdown, who trounced Bideford by eight wickets.
Bideford were all out for 96 after a going over from Lewdown’s South African seamer Rob Mutch (4-22) and Kris Harris (5-40).
Andy Webbe (32) led a fight back from 12 for two to 66 for six, but after he went it was downhill all the way.
A stand of 79 for the first wicket between Harris (41) and Harry Geering (40) as good as won the match for Lewdown. Jack Skuse (5) and Mark Jordan were the not-out batters at the end.
Stoke Gabriel are up to third having inflicted a nine-wicket defeat on whipping boys Cockington.
Simon Phillips (4-33) and Nick Sandbrook blew Cockington away for just 73.
Rob Baker (36no) and Mark Newman (31no) did what was required to win the game in double-quick time.
Kingsbridge drop down from third to fourth in the wake of high-scoring draw at Hatherleigh.
James Fletcher hit 69 and Jack Westlake 42 – they put on 89 for the first wicket – as Kingsbridge progressed towards 255 for nine.
Fletcher and Chris Bowles (43) notched another 74 for the fourth wicket and there was a chip in of 45 from Ashley Treeby as well.
Simon Gillespie (5-7) took what bowling plaudits there were for Hatherleigh, who were 224 for nine when their overs ran out.
Rob Chapman blazed away for a century (116) in the Hatherleigh riposte and in stands of 79 with Tom Rogers (23) and 82 with Gareth Tidball (27) made a dent in the arrears.
In the quest for runs Hatherleigh’s batters took chances against the spin of Bhanu deSilva – and paid the price.
Smart catching in the deep helped de Silva claim seven for 69.
With an over to go Hatherleigh’s last pair of Rob Cockwill and Sean Leatheren covered up for the draw.
Ashburton remain in the bottom two after going down by 63 runs in the derby clash with Ivybridge.
Ashes appeared to have done the hard work by removing Ivybridge for 173 with Marcus West (3-26) and Gordon Colwill (3-31) leading the bowling effort.
Kelvin Trenty made 40 and Jeewan de Silva 21, which didn’t leave much from the rest.
Ashley Berry (24) and Tom Durman (17) had the only scores of note as Ashes crashed to 110 all out.
Disappointingly for skipper Chris Pascoe, the bottom half of the order went for just 18 runs between them.
Sri Lankan de Silva bagged five wickets for 21 runs and there were two each for Jamie Bulllock and Josh Zimmerman.
