Promotion bid is Martin's aim

CHUDLEIGH captain Jon Martin thinks the new win-lose format in the B Division will help his side get out of it this season.

The Kate Brook men were there or thereabouts for most of last season, fading to finish a distant third 25 points behind runners-up Hatherleigh.

Chudleigh didn’t draw a game all season under the old format – won eight, lost six, four abandoned – which Martin feels sums them up.

They had far more batting and bowling bonus points than Hatherleigh -13 in total – and the positive way they play their cricket can only be an advantage now the format has changed.

“We do have plenty of bowling options so finding at least five to get through the overs won’t be an issue,” said Martin.

“As we don’t play for draws we are used to going for the win and that is something most of our rivals haven’t been doing.”

There has been some transfer movement during the winter, mainly in, although overseas batsman Divan Marais has departed for Chagford.

The new summer import is Scott Schaw, a keeper-batter from New Zealand.

Aussie-born quota exempt player Sean Day is available for the full season having arrived late on in 2012 for a second stint with the club.

The Thomas boys – Jack and Ollie – have made the short switch from Bovey Tracey looking to press for 2nd or even 1st XI cricket which they were not getting before.
