Ferro takes charge at Clyst St George

CLYST St George have appointed Chris Ferro as their new captain as part of their rebuilding plans following relegation to the D Division last year.
The club has had an eventful six months. Clyst thought a thrilling last-over win in the final match of last season had secured their place in the C Division for another year.
But their misreading of a bonus-point rule eventually led to their demotion and the survival of Plymouth CS&R, the side Clyst played and defeated in that fateful last game.
The matter was only resolved following a special general meeting of the league, to which all clubs were invited and had a vote.
It was Clyst’s second relegation in three seasons and sees the back in the D Division for the first time since they were champions of it in 1990 – Tim Read leading the way with 449 runs
Since last season’s disappointments, Clyst have finished second in the Sidmouth Indoor League and they are optimistic for the summer ahead.
"We've had a really positive response from our members over the winter," said chairman Mike Johnson.
"Our ethos of playing good cricket in the right spirit remains strong, and we are continuing our proud record of developing good young cricketers.
“There's great potential at the club - we just have to work a bit harder for more success on the field.”
New skipper Ferro (left) agreed, but added recruitment is a must.
“Our first-choice teams are strong, but rarely available,” said Ferro. If we can attract a few more players that should ensure more consistent performances and will help us to bring through our talented colts over the next few years.”
Ferro has taken over from John Meredith (below), the former Plymouth and Exeter player whose work with the Church Army has taken him to Birmingham.
The new man in charge is a lecturer at the University of Exeter and joined Clyst in 2009.
“I joined the Erratics first, the university staff team that plays a lot of friendly cricket throughout Devon, and does so in a great spirit - trying hard to win but always looking to make friends along the way,” said Ferro.
I'm keen to encourage more of the same sort of spirit in the league.
“There are a few people who play for the Erratics and Clyst and I found Clyst very welcoming, so joined them when I decided to get back into league cricket.”
Clyst are training hard at the Devon Cricket Centre at the university ahead of the first home matches of the season on April 19 and 20 at the picturesque Bohea Field.
