CORNWOOD skipper Jason Hall wasn’t looking forward to picking his first team of the season as he has a deeper player pool than last season.
Some familiar faces have left Oak Park – Dave Petherbridge (Plymstock), Phil Bees (Tavistock) and Fran Adams (retired) – who have been stalwarts for more than 100 years between them.
Disappointingly for Cornwood, young left-armer Matt Petherbridge has departed for Torquay, which has been hard to take.
Nick Goodlife, the chairman of cricket, said Petherbridge went with their best wishes despite the club’s disappointment.
“Matthew has been with the club since being knee high to a grasshopper and come right through our colts ranks,” said Goodliffe.
“He has high aspirations and due to his successes with Devon at various age groups, has captured the interest of the Premier Division sides.
“We genuinely wish Matthew well with his cricket this season and hope he continues to progress his development at the same rate that has occurred in recent years.”
New players at the club are Craig James, a pacey left-arm opening bowler from New Zealand’s, Wellington District.
It is his first time in UK he was recommended by contacts of club players who are playing in that region
Marc Roca, an experienced batsman who recently moved to the area, having played in a Lancashire league and more recently for Sonning CC in the Thames Valley League,
“Mark is an experienced cricket coach, having been head of cricket at schools in the Reading area,” said Goodliffe.
He has also assumed the role of U15 coach for the season, so an added bonus for the club.
Matt Tamsett, a left-arm spinner previously with Yelverton, has signed on looking to challenge himself.
Back for a second year is club pro Jackson Thompson, who is keen to put an indifferent 2014 season behind him.
“He has looked totally focused on his batting in pre-season matches, including a better than a run a ball 50 in our victory against Grampound Road,” said Goodliffe.
Jason Hall continues as captain. While he may have had a headache picking a side to face Barton due to the influx of 1st XI candidates, Goodliffe said it was a good position for the club to be in.
‘This can only be a benefit for our 2nd XI skipper James Horgan, who will be leading his essentially young squad into tough competition in the 2nd XI Premier Division after comfortably winning the 2nd XI A Division last season,” said Goodliffe.
“James will unfortunately be without the ability and experience of opening bat Duncan Boase, who will be sidelined for the whole season after undergoing a hip operation.”
