CORNWOOD are back in the nets early preparing for their return to the Premier Division after an absence of 11 seasons.
The last time Cornwood were in the top flight was 2002, when they were relegated without a win to their name at the end of a sorry campaign.
Current Corns’ captain Craig Harris is determined to hit the ground running this summer – which is why practice is already under way.
Winter training is up and running at Tor Bridge High in Plymouth every Tuesday (8-10pm) and will be running for another nine weeks.
“It is a mixture of fitness led by club players, trainers and coaches and nets,” said Harris.
“Any new faces for any standard are always welcome to come along and can contact me (07725651519) or visit our Play Cricket website for more contact info.”
Cornwood are close to completing a deal to bring a South African player to Oak Park to replace Mohammad Salman, who is not returning in 2013.
Harris is saying little about the identity of the new man, other than he will be a replacement in the bowling department for seam bowler Michael Wood.
“Woody is moving away for work and so the club wishes him the best for the future with big thanks for his previous commitments,” said Harris.
“The pro replacement will also be a capable batter and comes from a decent standard and with good review from a previous club in England.”
From closer to home comes Kyle Van Rooyen, a bowler and capable batter from Truro.
“Kyle has been playing in Cornwall for a few years and has some great stats so we are excited that he has chosen Cornwood for next year.”
While the outdoor season is three months away, Cornwood’s participation in the indoor competitions continues this weekend.
“Two of our teams are in the indoor cup semis coming this weekend with the A team looking to continue their hold on the Devon championship,” said Harris.
