STOKE Gabriel have signed hugely experienced batsman Ian Coulton for the season ahead.Coulton, who turned 50 last year, was playing Devon League cricket for Buckfastleigh in the late 1970s before many of his new team-mates were born!
In a prolific career spent almost entirely in the Premier and A Divisions, Coulton has played for Torquay, Exeter, Bovey Tracey, Barton and Brixham.
Coulton was captain at Torquay, Bovey Tracey and Barton but just wants to play these days.
After a couple of years off Coulton is raring to go again – while he still can!
“I have been in the nets and enjoyed it,” said Coulton.
“The B Division is going to be relatively unknown for me, but it will be a challenge to pick it up again after a couple of years away.”
Coulton is one of Stoke’s pre-season signings and captain Josh Dowling is another.
Bill Alcock, the club’s vice-chairman, said Stoke have other irons in the fire on the signing front.
“We are also in discussions with a couple of other players and hope to announce further arrivals soon,” said Alcock.
For Aussie Dowing it is a case of returning ‘home’ at Stoke Gabriel was the first club he played for after arriving from Australia in 2004.
Stints with Chudleigh (2006) then Abbotskerswell (2011-12) followed before Dowling chose to return to Stoke during the last close season.
Dowling will be Stoke’s overseas player and captain in 2013 as well as coaching the colts alongside Doug Ansley.
Stoke needed to do some beefing up for the season ahead as they will be playing B Division cricket for the first time since joining the league in 1984.
Indoor nets have gone well and outdoor practice starts on Tuesday, April 9 at 6.30pm. New faces welcome.
Colts practice nights for all ages from U11-U19 are on Fridays.
