C DIVISION 2nd XI
IPPLEPEN tasted defeat for the first time this season when beaten by Ottery St Mary II by six wickets.
Ipplepen batted first and laboured their way to 150 with Lee Curtis (43), Simon Tapley (42) and Keith Bell (24), the principle run makers.
Keith Biggs (4-24) and Robert Bradshaw-Smith (3-22) combined to claim the bulk of the wickets for the Otters who lost just four wickets chasing.
Ron Crabbe led things with an unbeaten half century and Jim Iley was the other unbeaten bat at the close with 31. Matt Hodgson (2-48) was the most successful of the Ipplepen bowlers.
Skipper Tapley said his view was this Saturday’s game against Thorverton is more important than the reasons for losing to Ottery.
“We were always going to lose at some point and it will be about how we bounce back,” said Tapley.
“We have batted badly two weeks running and will make some changes to both personnel and order.
“We bowled four maidens to start with and good bowling from Matt Hodgson got them down to 70-4.
“Clean hitting from Ron Crabbe and Gavin Iley saw them over the line.”
Cyst St George were no doubt cursing the weather after running into Ivybridge on a day when their 1st XI game against Hatherleigh was rained off.
For the Bridgers were able to fill out their team with 1st XI regulars, two of whom made a massive difference.
Skipper Sean Middleton (71), Alan Welsh (31) and Richard Coe (25), provided the principle innings in a Clyst offering of 207-6.
Sri Lankan Jeewan de Silva took 3-22 and Brian Jarvis claimed 2-40 for Ivybridge, who were led to victory by a century from Kelvin Trent.
First teamer Trent was finally out to a catch by Oz Besley off the bowling of Julian Welland for 116.
David Eadie weighed in with a knock of 61 as the visitors sailed home with seven wickets and plenty of overs, to spare.
Welland finished with 2-38 whilst Besley also covered himself in glory in the outfield with a superb throw from fine leg into the gloves of wicketkeeper Kevin Coe to affect a run out.
That’s seven defeats on the reel now for Clyst, who are stuck fast at the foot of the table.
Max Felgate was in great form for Axminster II with bat and ball but he ended up on the losing side as hosts Cornwood III won by 81 runs.
Dave Petherbridge (79no), Steve Dibbins (61), Phil Bees (46) and Graham Jones (25), combined to lead the hosts to 244-5. Felgate claimed three for 47.
Tom Maxwell then top scored with 52, and Felgate hit a fine 46, only he and Tom Maxwell (52) made much impression as Fran Adams (3-35), Chris Horton (3-11) and Petherbridge (2-43) combined to bowl the visitors out for 165.
