DEVON CUP FIRST ROUNDHOLDERS Sidmouth got past Bradninch by 25 runs to reach the last eight of the Devon KO Cup.
Sidmouth’s total of 151 for nine in a full 40-over game looked a little inadequate while Bradninch opener Paul Tweddle was smashing them for 40 off 29 balls as the home side set off in hot pursuit.
Once Tweddle went Bradninch slowed as Sidmouth skipper Will Murray (4-14) and Matt Cooke (3-11) got the brake on.
Ross Acton made 25, but inadvertently ran-out two of his partners while at the crease.
Twice Acton straight drove Sidmouth seamer Sam Anderson – and twice Anderson fingertipped the ball on to the stumps to run out Matt Jarrett then Nick Dean.
At 118 for six with five overs to go the game remained a contest, but Bradninch were unable to keep up with the asking rate and were bowled out for 126 tryin.
Earlier, Anderson (25) and Liam Lewis (32) made early runs then the Bess brothers – Luke (13) and Zac (40no) - knocked up 48 for the eighth wicket.
Sidmouth were glad of a late pick-me-up as they had been died down by niggardly bowling from Dean (3-25), Gary Chappell (3-31) and Dan Milligan (2-34).
Waiting for Sidmouth in the last eight are Cornwood, who overcame Plymstock by 24 runs.
In a game reduced from 40 to 25 overs a side each due to bad weather, Cornwood made 142 for five with Mark Horwell top scoring on 48.
The best stand of the innings was one of 53 for the second wicket between Horwell and Ben Warren (27). Skipper Craig Harris and Adam Goodliffe (22) racked up another 23.
Plymstock dipped to 65 for five in reply – Goodlifee (3-19), Matt Butterworth (2-20) and Matt Skeemer (2-30) doing the damage – but a bit too soon Cornwood took the pressure off.
James Nicholls thumped a bright and breezy 26 as Plymstock reached a respectable 118 for eight in reply.
“After we got the first five out we took our foot off and they kept coming at us,” said relieved skipper Harris.
“One big over before we got Nicholls out would have made it very interesting.
“Sidmouth in the next round is a good draw for us as a test of how we measure up for the Premier Division, which is where we would like to be playing.”
Holders Sidmouth got through thanks to a 25-run win at Bradninch.
The tie between Barton and Heathcoat was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
